From the Great Moderation to the Global Financial Crisis: Emerging Markets and Reforming the International Economic System
In: The Whitehead journal of diplomacy and international relations, Band 10, Heft 2, S. 39-64
ISSN: 1538-6589
Discusses the global economic wonder that is China, beginning in 1978 when that nation began to embrace capitalism. Begins with China's growth model and the ways it has integrated with the global market, much of which has been aided by a vigorous search for markets and a large labor force. The second section focuses on numerous emerging economies as they rose to success in the 1990's. This came on the heels of China's admittance to the WTO, coinciding with a global fall in inflation. Part 3 continues its look at emerging markets, particularly Chinese participation, along with the global financial crisis. While excessive risk-taking was a large part of the crisis, other factors played a heavy part, such as loose money policy after the dot.com bubble burst in 2001.The fourth section considers China as it relates economically with the United States and European Union, with the final part arguing for a new type of Bretton Woods-like institutions. To mitigate much of what has happened from occurring again in the future, regulations must be put in place on an international scale. Adapted from the source document.
