This Is Not an Atlas' gathers more than 40 counter-cartographies from all over the world. This collection shows how maps are created and transformed as a part of political struggle, for critical research or in art and education: from indigenous territories in the Amazon to the anti-eviction movement in San Francisco; from defending commons in Mexico to mapping refugee camps with balloons in Lebanon; from slums in Nairobi to squats in Berlin; from supporting communities in the Philippines to reporting sexual harassment in Cairo. 'This Is Not an Atlas' seeks to inspire, to document the underrepresented, and to be a useful companion when becoming a counter-cartographer yourself.

"Mapping Israel, Mapping Palestine is an analysis of the ways that segregated landscapes have shaped digital cartography in Jerusalem and the West Bank since 1967. Extending work on how technology is socially constructed, it investigates the ways that knowledge is geographically produced. Technoscientific practices are situated in landscapes that are at once both social and material, and this influences the content of digital technology in sometimes unpredictable ways. Therefore it is necessary to reflexively engage with materiality and space in order to enable more diverse forms of knowledge. Maps are an iconic symbol of modernity, and they have been central to debates over the future of Palestine and Israel. This has only intensified as Geographic Information Science (GIS) mapmaking has led to increasingly minute forms of surveillance and control. Intended to display objective facts, maps inspire extensive discussions. However, the framing of these discussions cannot be divorced from the participants' asymmetrical mobilities within the very terrains that they seek to portray. Therefore it is essential to investigate how Palestinian, Israeli, and international cartographers are unevenly affected by the segregated landscapes which their technologies have helped to create. Mapping Israel, Mapping Palestine addresses these important issues by bringing together the disciplines of critical geography, postcolonial theory, and science and technology studies (STS). It presents an analysis of the maps and mapmaking practices that result when diverse cartographers chart the same landscapes that so condition their movement. It investigates the myriad ways that the segregated landscapes of the Israeli occupation shape knowledge about the occupation." (Publisher's description)

; This doctoral dissertation addresses various questions that in previous research on royal court and translation have only been touched upon: how does translation (including translation and interpreting) manifest itself in the diplomatic relations in its various forms; where can the protagonists of translational activity be found; what is the status of these actors? The Corpus for this investigation is consisting of archival materials on individual and institutional-structural aspects from the Habsburg courts at Vienna and Madrid. As a methodological framework histoire croisée was chosen, whose multiperspective approach allows for investigating the translational actors and translated texts in a structured way on various levels of analysis and along a manner of different dimensions. The analysis of the translational actors geographical, political, economical, professional and biographical location reveals an increasing diversity in their professional profile at the Habsburg courts. The issues of Europe-wide mobility, loyalties, and family as well as professional networks are explored as part of the translational actors' careers. Analyzing the written translations gives insight into what kinds of texts were translated as part of diplomacy at court, and what their functions were. It also became evident that translation played a decisive role in the Habsburg courts' power politics. At the Spanish court, the translation volume was increasing with the administration's development, which eventually led to a high degree of institutionalization of translation; at the Viennese court, no such development could be detected. In Early Modern Time, translation was often an invisible element of diplomacy at court, whose importance gained much in significance as structural changes in the territories under investigation were taking place, culminating in its institutionalization.
