Linguistic minorities are everywhere, and they are diverse. In this context, linguistic mediation activities – whether translation or interpreting – are key to the social inclusion of any kind of linguistic minority. In most societies autochthonous linguistic minorities coexist with foreignspeaking minorities and people with (or without) disabilities who rely linguistically or medially adapted on texts to access information. The present volume draws on this broad understanding of the concept of linguistic minorities to explore some of the newest developments in the field of translation studies and linguistics. The articles are structured around three main axes:
• accessibility of content, especially audiovisual translation
• intralingual translation, including initiatives regarding plain language, easy-to-read and easy language
• mediation for minorities in a broader sense and language ideologies.

Today there is greater realization of the need to preserve linguistic heterogeneity and yet again media has come to the rescue of lesser-known languages that are being crushed under the weight of language of the majorities. India has given official language status to 18 languages. State reorganization on linguistic basis in Karnataka also led to the neglect of linguistic minorities who were compelled to learn and adopt thelanguage of the majority in education, employment, and governance. Kodava, Tulu and Konkani speaking populations are the linguistic minorities of the state who failed to establish political identity and cultural supremacy owing to marginalization of theirlanguage.

Regionalistic and ethnic nationalist movements since World War II.

This article deals with the Italian case of minority language protection in the media. After providing a general introduction to the development of the protection of minority languages in Europe in general and of minority language broadcast media in Italy in particular, the article focuses on the role that mass media can play in the preservation or weakening of minority languages. By comparing different measures of protection adopted by national and regional authorities in Italy, the article aims to illustrate how these measures can be translated into different levels of development of broadcast media provisions for linguistic minorities. The article explores some of the effects different protective measures can have on the survival, status and economic conditions of the linguistic minority on the one hand, and the relationship with the state and the majority group on the other.
