Les coalitions au pouvoir y ont cherché à utiliser le pouvoir municipal comme un levier de changement économique et social pour la majorité des citoyens et comme un instrument d'amélioration de la qualité de vie en ville. Les réalisations, même éphémères, que décrit l'article n'en sont pas moins significatives dans le contexte politique conservateur qui prévaut actuellement aux États-Unis.

Monica Massy-Beresford wird 1894 in London als Tochter eines Großgrundbesitzers geboren und wächst behütet auf dem Schloß ihres Vaters in Irland auf. Durch ihre Heirat mit dem 11 Jahre älteren dänischen Aristrokraten Jorgen de Wichfeld kommt sie nach Dänemark. Als die Familie in den 30er Jahren in finanzielle Schwierigkeiten gerät, macht sie eine Karriere als Geschäftsfrau und sichert so ihren Lebensunterhalt. Ohne das Wissen ihres Mannes engagiert sie sich während des 2. Weltkrieges, als Dänemark von den Nazis besetzt wird, in verschiedenen Widerstandsgruppen. Sie wird verraten, inhaftiert, zum Tode verurteilt, begnadigt, nach Deutschland deportiert, wo sie kurze Zeit später (1945) an den Folgen katastrophaler Haftbedingungen stirbt. Als Heldin des dänischen Widerstands hat sie einen wichtigen Teil dieses Kapitels dänischer Geschichte mitgeschrieben. - Für Leser/innen mit Interesse an historischen Frauenbiographien.
