The article discusses Japanese revisionist claims to the Kuril Islands and a portion of Sakhalin Island from 1955 to the present. The author notes that these claims are squarely in conflict with the San Francisco Peace Treaty of 1951, in which Japan formally ceded all rights, title and claim to those territories to the Soviet Union. Japanese academics appeal to the older St. Petersburg Russian-Japanese Treaty of 1875, which guaranteed the Kuril Islands to Japan. The author describes the events at the Potsdam Conference, as well as the contents of the Yalta Agreement, which led to the agreement among the allies that the Kurils would be ceded to the Soviet Union. The author also notes that Japan voluntarily renounced claims to the islands through a further 1956 Joint Declaration with the Soviet Union that renounced any territorial claims made by Japan created by the war.
