AbstractIn this paper, we examine the relationship between government political ideology and green innovation. We employ data on 20 democratic countries with multi-party systems between 2010 and 2018. Green innovation is measured by the total patents in environment-related technologies. We find a negative relationship between left-leaning government and green innovation, suggesting that leftist governments are associated with low green innovations. This finding is consistent with the political assumption that leftist governments resist technological advancement because it may cause unemployment, whereas rightist promotes technological advancement to benefit the capitalist. We also find that the effect of political ideology remains the same during electoral years, implying that elections do not present any pressure on parties to change their course towards green innovation. Our result implies that partisan politics matters in finding solutions to unending environmental challenges. The results are robust to alternative measurements of variables and econometric identification strategies.

Purpose: This paper examines the drivers of companies' compliance with IFRS using the stakeholder salience theory. Research Methods: We have used panel data from 205 companies to examine the IFRS compliance level across 13 African countries. Our study has also established the relationship between stakeholders' attributes and firms' compliance with IFRS. Findings: On IFRS compliance, we found that the average compliance score among the companies over the period was 73.09% with a minimum score of 62.86% and maximum of 85.61%. We found a significant positive association between audit committee competence (ACC) and compliance and found the same for chartered accountants on board (AOB). There is less compliance with the latest standards, such as IFRS 3, 7, and 13. Also, IAS 17, 19, 36, and 37 are problematic across the sample. We also found that compliance has been increasing over the years. Practical implications. For companies, our studies provide empirical evidence on the importance of having chartered accountants' corporate boards as well as competent audit committees involved in ensuring high compliance with IFRS. Our findings also provide valuable information for professional accounting organizations on the role of its members (chartered accountants) in the effectiveness of IFRS compliance. Value/Contribution: This study complements and updates prior studies on IFRS compliance with findings from Africa, a region that has been neglected in the literature. It provides empirical evidence on the importance of chartered accountants sitting on corporate boards in ensuring high compliance with IFRS.

PurposeThe general purpose of the paper is to examine the effect of financial globalization on income inequality. The specific purposes are: 1) To examine the effect of overall financial globalization on income inequality. 2) To analyze whether de facto and de jure financial globalization have differential effects on income inequality. 3) To scrutinize whether the effect of financial globalization on income inequality varies across countries of different income groups and quantiles of income inequality.Design/methodology/approachThe authors employed panel quantile regression using 73 countries over 2000–2016 to examine the effect of financial globalization on income inequality. The authors employed fixed effect and panel quantile regressions and classified the countries into income groups to compare differential effects of financial globalization across different income groups. Further, the authors unbundled financial globalization into de facto and de jure financial globalizations to investigate whether their effects on income inequality vary.FindingsOverall financial globalization raises income inequality more at lower quantiles of inequality. De jure financial globalization reduces income inequality in high-income countries. In high-income countries, de jure financial globalization has more favorable income distribution at lower quantiles of inequality. In contrast, de facto financial globalization raises inequality regardless of income classification of the countries.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, the authors for the first time employed panel quantile regression to analyze whether financial globalization affects income inequality across different quantiles. In addition to de facto globalization, the authors used the newly developed de jure financial globalization index to examine its impact on income inequality. The de jure dimension is largely neglected in the literature. The authors provide empirical evidence on how the different dimensions of financial globalization, de facto and de jure, impact inequality in high-income, middle-income and low-income countries.

The economic growth of most developing countries has been abysmal, and, therefore, has attracted the attention of researchers and policy think tanks. The present study contributes by estimating the impact of different forms of capital inflows on economic growth with evidence from Ghana. The study further examines the interaction effects of these inflows and quality of institutions on economic growth. The capital inflows considered in the study are foreign direct investment, remittances, foreign aid and external debt. Using annual time series data, spanning 1984–2018, the autoregressive distributed lag model is employed for the analysis. The results without interaction terms show that remittances have a positive impact on economic growth, whereas external debt and foreign direct investment impact economic growth negatively in the long run. Foreign aid exerts an insignificant impact in both the short and long run. However, the results reveal that external debt significantly impacts economic growth positively when interacted with quality of institutions variable in the long run. The results further reveal that remittances have a positive impact on economic growth in the long run when interacted with quality of institutions variable. It is, therefore, concluded that the quality of institutions in Ghana is crucial for economic growth. Important policy implications aimed at improving economic growth have been provided based on the findings.

Social protection is very important as far as marginalised and vulnerable people are concerned. Ghana has implemented several social protection programmes over the years, aimed at improving the welfare of Ghanaians. However, these programmes have not been as effective as expected due to some challenges in their implementation and in the national economy. Given the ineffectiveness of the programmes, the role of the extended family in improving the welfare of vulnerable people cannot be overemphasised. Notwithstanding, the extended family system is fading away and losing its importance due to modernisation and the rise in individualism. The study sought, therefore, to justify the need for the preservation of the extended family system. Using 1,688 respondents and employing the binary probit model, the results show that the poor, the aged, single parents, the uneducated, the unemployed and rural residents are more likely to live with their extended family. This implies that the extended family continues to serve as a safety net for the vulnerable in Ghana, hence the need to preserve it.

Purpose– The aim of this paper is to set a baseline understanding of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) concept amongst the different stakeholders in the mining industry in Ghana and further examine their appreciation of issues of occupational health and safety. It explored the integration of issues of health and safety of employees into the broader CSR agenda through a stakeholder analysis.Design/methodology/approach– The study population comprised various stakeholders operating in the mining industry of Ghana. The purposive sampling technique was used in the selection of the organisations/institutions that participated in the study. In all, 35 people were interviewed, and the interview data were analysed using thematic-content analysis.Findings– The findings provide an insight into how the various stakeholders in the mining industry in Ghana understood the CSR concept and how they went about practising it. Appreciation of issues health and safety by the various stakeholders also received considerable attention. All the stakeholders equated CSR to community relations. In all the cases, respondents referred to the local community as their focal point when discussing the concept.Originality/value– On the basis of this paper, it appears that mining companies in Ghana have looked upon the concept as a strategic challenge and not as a series of high-profile initiatives aimed at ensuring a responsible business practice. This paper adds to the literature by providing a perspective on how CSR associates with health and safety.
