Foreigners in Turkey At a time when Turkish legislation is being adapted to conform to the principles of the European Union, the situation of foreign residents in Turkey has become an important issue. By analysing the historical dimension in depth, we observe that the issue is highly complex, not only due to Turkey's Imperial past, but also because of nationalist tendencies which are still very strong today. This article proposes conceptual reflections about foreigners in general and foreigners in Turkey in particular. After a survey of the different interpretations of what a foreigner is (from sociological foreigners to legal foreigners), it attempts to classify foreigners in Turkey and concludes with a description of the state of research on the issue and points to future directions for research.
