A political battle is being waged over the use and control of culture and information. While media companies and copyright organisations argue for stricter intellectual property laws, a growing body of citizens challenge the contemporary IP-regime. This has seen a political mobilisation of piracy. Pirate parties see themselves as a digital civil rights movement, defending the public domain and the citizen's right to privacy against copyright expansionism and increased surveillance. Since the first pirate party was formed in Sweden in 2006, similar parties have emerged across the world. This article draws on a study of the culture and ideology of copyright resistance, through interviews with pirate party representatives in Europe and North America. It focuses on challenges to democracy, and the distinction between public and private property and spaces, in the wake of the war on terror and the global financial crisis.

"Piracy" is a concept that seems everywhere in the contemporary world. From the big screen with the dashing Jack Sparrow, to the dangers off the coast of Somalia; from the claims by the Motion Picture Association of America that piracy funds terrorism, to the political impact of pirate parties in countries like Sweden and Germany. While the spread of piracy provokes responses from the shipping and copyright industries, the reverse is also true: for every new development in capitalist technologies, some sort of "piracy" moment emerges. This is maybe most obvious in the current ideologisation of Internet piracy where the rapid spread of so called Pirate Parties is developing into a kind of global political movement. While the pirates of Somalia seem a long way removed from Internet pirates illegally downloading the latest music hit or, it is the assertion of this book that such developments indicate a complex interplay between capital flows and relations, late modernity, property rights and spaces of contestation. That is, piracy seems to emerge at specific nodes in capitalist relations that create both blockages and leaks between different social actors. ; PiracyLab

This article focuses on the challenges confronted by contemporary universities when they undertake 'community engagement' activities through the lens of an active citizenship workshop we have designed and implemented. We begin by concentrating on the very concept of 'engagement', unpicking its ambiguities and returning its complexities to where they belong – in social experience. As both practitioners and researchers involved in many years of 'engagement', we reflect on the aim, purpose and outcomes of such activities. Drawing on the theoretical traditions of educator Paulo Freire and philosopher Martin Heidegger, we apply our engagement activities and citizenship workshops to the aspiration of transformational change: both for those who participate in the activities and for us, as educators. We thus use 'engagement' as a guide to making better and more strategic interventions in the three sets of relationships inextricably involved in 'active citizenship' projects: 'engaged research' with academic and other partners; our own 'engagement' with the young people we work with; and finally, their 'engagement' as citizens with the rest of society.

By exploring each of these questions, we aim to show that a multidimensional and complex understanding is required for effective policy discussions to confront the challenge of global warming. We engage the perspective of a miner and an environmental activist to illustrate the tensions relating to carbon pollution in an era of climate change, and in so doing we offer a parable for our carbon constrained world. This paper examines how data access and transfer rights are conceptualised in the European Union and Australia. The study discusses the planned introduction of a Consumer Data Right (CDR) to Australia and contrasts it to comparable developments in European law. We then assess the broader reform moments around data (which these various data access and transfer rights form a part of), that have occurred in each jurisdiction. The paper shows that Europe has placed an increasing value on protecting the fundamental rights of citizens, whereas Australia has taken a more neoliberal approach to data, only granting individuals rights in the context of the market.

Over the last decade piracy has emerged as a growing field of research covering a wide range of different phenomena, from fashion counterfeits and media piracy, through to 17th century buccaneers and present-day pirates off the coast of Somalia. In many cases piracy can be a metaphor or an analytical perspective to understand conflicts and social change. This article relates this fascination with piracy as a practice and a metaphor to academia and asks what a pirate methodology of knowledge production could be: how, in other words, researchers and educators can be understood as 'pirates' to the corporate university. Drawing on the history of maritime piracy as well as on a discussion on contemporary pirate libraries that disrupt proprietary publishing, the article explores the possibility of a pirate methodology as a way of acting as a researcher and relating to existing norms of knowledge production. The methodology of piratical scholarship involves exploiting the grey zones and loopholes of contemporary academia. It is a tactical intervention that exploits short term opportunities that arise in the machinery of academia to the strategic end of turning a limiting structure into an enabling field of opportunities. We hope that such a concept of pirate methodologies may help us reflect on how sustainable and constructive approaches to knowledge production emerge in the context of a critique of the corporate university.

This report assesses the state of data access in the communications sector, with a specific focus on data-intensive products and services. Recognising that consumers are becoming increasingly concerned about their personal data, we decided to ask a simple question: can we access our data? The research team tried to access data from social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter),online companies (Google), telecommunications companies (Optus, Vodafone, Telstra) and fitness wearables (Fitbit, Apple Watch).We found that access processes were convoluted and diverse and there was no clear standard across each product [i.e. wearables] and/or service category [i.e. telecommunications providers].While we could get access to some sort of data, the provision of data was not comprehensive in many cases and the data that was provided came in a variety of formats. Australia is about to introduce a Consumer Data Right (CDR), which aims to simplify and standardise the process of accessing and transferring data. Our findings have shown that such a reform is needed. We recommend the introduction of the Consumer Data Right. Our other central recommendation is that Australia needs an equivalent to the General Data Protection Right (GDPR). The European Union has introduced a foundational reform that provides citizens with a range of rights, including a right to be forgotten and a right to access data. While the CDR is an important reform, it is narrowly targeted. It introduces a new definition of consumer data that is broader than the existing definition of 'personal information' in the Privacy Act 1988. It also introduces additional legislative obligations. However, these new definitions and obligations only relate to data access and transfer. As a result, Australians will only have a very limited set of rights in relation to their data. Moreover, a range of other government bodies are conducting reviews of privacy related issues or proposing privacy reforms, alongside the CDR process. This has resulted in a series of overlapping reform agendas. We recommend that the Australian Government should wait until these reports are complete rather than engaging in patchwork reform. The CDR should form part of a broader suite of rights that update Australian privacy law for a data-driven economy. The rollout of the right has been delayed until February 2020. Subsequently, we have offered a series of more specific recommendations relating to the CDR and Australia's broader data policy framework in Chapter 8. The consultation process has finished and the Bill is likely to be introduced as it stands. However, we hope that this analysis can inform the ongoing improvement of the right into the future.

Maximal citizenship educators are committed to advancing an approach to citizenship learning with the following staple features: learner-centred; experiential; problem- and action-oriented; racialised, classed and gendered analysis of power; and strengthening the public sphere and democracy. This type of approach to education shares many similarities with the principles of critical pedagogy. However, there have been valid arguments that Frankfurt School Critical Theory inspired pedagogy still tends to focus on class, at the expense of gender and race, analyses. This article seeks ways to refresh and extend the language and theoretical frameworks used by critical pedagogues. To do so, it will deploy the terms justice pedagogy and complexity pedagogy. The adjective 'justice' does the same work as 'critical' in signalling the commitment to using education as a means to bring about a more socially just world. The recent rise in scholarship in complexity thinking lends itself to conceptualising critical pedagogy in necessarily fresh ways. This article draws attention to the kindred nature of guiding concepts in complexity thinking and critical pedagogy, including grassroots organising, distributed decision-making and emergent learning, before presenting a description of how such approaches might refresh critical pedagogy through a critical citizenship education programme using justice pedagogy. This example illustrates the way that justice pedagogy can inform decisions about appropriate teaching and learning strategies for children and young people today growing up in an increasingly globalised world.
