In Wahlkampfzeiten spielt die politische Haltung der katholischen Bischöfe eine nicht unwesentliche Rolle in den Vereinigten Staaten. Die Katholiken stellen immerhin ein Viertel der amerikanischen wahlberechtigten Bevölkerung. Dies erklärt auch, warum beide Parteien (Republikaner und Demokraten) und ihre Präsidentschaftskandidaten versuchen, die moralische Unterstützung der Bischöfe zu erhalten. Anhand dreier Beispiele (1976, 1984) wird aufgezeigt, aufgrund welcher Motivation und wie aktiv sich Bischöfe am Wahlkampf beteiligten (Schwangerschaftsabbruch) und wann ihre Meinung und damit auch ihr politischer Einfluß von geringerer Relevanz war (1988).
