Feminism, which once opened many windows of opportunity for women, has now turned against itself. Many of feminism's pioneers & most brilliant advocates are now protesting the very social developments they cheered & accelerated only a few decades ago because these developments have proved harmful to the interests of most women. An example of such a harmful development is no-fault divorce laws, passed in 48 states as a result of feminist pressure. Studies show that, as a result of these laws, divorced women & their children suffer a 73% drop in their standard of living while ex-husbands enjoy a 42% rise in theirs. Thoughtful feminists are promoting a new agenda that is closer to reality & to the hearts of the majority of US women. 4 Photographs. Modified AA
THIS PAPER CRITIQUES THE NEW REPUBLIC, AND FINDS IT COMPLEX ON SOCIAL ISSUES, SCHIZOPHRENIC IN OTHER ISSUES, THAT IT HAS LOST FAITH IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, THAT IT IS BECOMING MORE CONSERVATIVE, AND THAT ITS APOLOGIES FOR STALINISM AND COMMUNISM ARE BASED ON A LONG AND CHECKERED HISTORY. THE AUTHOR BELIEVES THAT TNR SHOULD BE ACCLAIMED FOR HONESTY FACING UP TO SOME OF THE CONTRADICTIONS IN LIBERALISM.
To the discomfort of many US conservatives, Sun Myong Moon's Unification Church has become a major funding source for many conservative activities, including the newly founded conservative newspaper, the Washington Times. Moon is strongly opposed to communism; he predicts a third world war in which the forces of freedom & communism will oppose each other, & he views the US as the New Jerusalem. At the same time, Moon's position is collectivist in implications. His organization has often been charged with brainwashing, & considerable coercion does appear to be associated with its recruitment processes; however, civil libertarians & Christian groups have defended its religious freedom, despite its disagreements with orthodox Christianity. The Unification Church appears to hope to follow the path of the Mormons & Christian Scientists toward respectability within the US. W. H. Stoddard
