The article presents the main contributions of the French approach of economics of convention (EC) to the analysis of classifications and quantifications. Here, Alain Desrosières has delivered many outstanding contributions. The article shortly presents the approach of EC. Conventions are socio-cognitive resources actors rely on to achieve shared interpretations, evaluations and valuations of situations and the value of objects, persons and actions. Also, the interpretation of institutions has to apply conventions. Conventions with semantic content and without semantic content are compared, and the different scopes of convention-based coordination (in time and space) are discussed. Also the conception of a political economy of classification and quantification is presented. At the end of the article, a typology of situations of classifications and quantifications is introduced.

"The article elaborates the conceptual difference between two core concepts of the French approach of economics of convention (EC), namely convention and institution. It is argued that modern institutionalisms and neoinstitutionalisms need to delimit the meaning of the notion institution as EC does. Then it is possible to work out the relations of institutions and other forms of cultural or structural resources. A proposal for such an elaboration is done by differing four perceived situations for institutional analysis. This elaboration could be used to enhance the explanatory capabilities of EC." "The article presents the methodological position of the French approach of the 'économie des conventions' (economics of convention, in short: EC). EC is introduced as a new form of a pragmatist institutionalism, which assumes capable actors, a plurality of conventions and different forms of rationality. EC explains collective quality constructions and regards conventions as solutions for collectives to deal with uncertainty. EC criticizes mainstream economics because of its notion of rationality and its methodological individualism. The article focuses on the methodological standpoint of EC. It is argued that the influences from pragmatism and structuralism place this new institutionalism beyond pragmatism and structuralism and that its methodological position can be regarded as a 'complex pragmatic situationalism'. The situation is the unit of analysis. In situations pluralities of conventions have an impact as possible logics of coordination and evaluation. The EC has a strong tradition in empirical historical analysis of institutional forms and socio-cognitive categories. It is argued that parallels to the Weberian methodology exist. But EC supposes that ideal types are common knowledge also to the ordinary actors. At the end it is the specific complex methodological position of EC that places it also beyond the Opposition of methodological individualism and methodological holism." (author's abstract)

In den letzten Jahrzehnten hat sich die qualitative Sozialforschung in den Sozialwissenschaften etabliert. Diese Etablierung ist institutionell und sozio-kognitiv sehr unterschiedlich erfolgt. Von Beginn an haben in der qualitativen Sozialforschung die Wissenschaftskritik, die Wissenschaftssoziologie und die methodologische Reflexion die Selbstbeobachtung bewerkstelligt. Lange stand dabei der Vergleich mit der quantitativen Sozialforschung im Mittelpunkt. In den letzten Jahren fokussiert die Selbstbeobachtung der qualitativen Sozialforschung zunehmend auf ihre eigenen Prozesse und Kriterien. Das Konzept der Performativität erscheint geeignet, diese Fokussierung der Selbstbeobachtung theoretisch zu fundieren. Es hat sich insbesondere in der Actor-Network Theory und den Social Studies of Finance als fruchtbares Konzept erwiesen, um die Analyse der Wissenschaftspraxis zu rekonstruieren. Der Artikel will das Performativitätskonzept einführen und die involvierten Dimensionen im Feld der qualitativen Sozialforschung aufzeigen. Es wird eine erweiterte Perspektive auf eine Soziologie der Sozialforschung entwickelt.

"From the standpoint of performativity theory and French epistemology the article offers a new perspective on the field of social research. The methods and methodologies of empirical social research are regarded as constituting not only the object of social research but sociology as a scientific discipline itself. Research methods and techniques have become socio-cognitive schemes of sociological scientific perception. Since the 1960s educational training in empirical social research has been forming an empirical disciplinary habitus. The contribution sketches out a social historical perspective on the contribution of social research to the co-construction of modern societies. Social scientific models of societies and sociological categories extend (through the institutions of social research) into societies where they coin social representations and ultimately the socio-cognition of society as a whole." Der Beitrag stellt den Ansatz der Économie des conventions (EC) vor. Dieser stellt den wichtigsten Teil der neuen französischen Sozialwissenschaften dar und bezieht sich auf die soziologisch-pragmatistische Theorie von Luc Boltanski und Laurent Thévenot. Die EC integriert als transdiziplinärer und empirischer Ansatz Forschungsfragen aus verschiedenen Bindestrichsoziologien (wie Wirtschaftssoziologie, Arbeits- und Organisationssoziologie) auf der Grundlage einer allgemeinen Handlungs- und Institutionentheorie und bietet konzeptionelle Lösungen für zentrale soziologische Fragestellungen an. Aufgegriffen werden Fragestellungen wie Koordination, Wertigkeiten und Handlungskompetenzen unter wechselseitigem Bezug aufeinander soziologisch zu fassen sind. Der Beitrag stellt einige Grundkonzepte der EC vor, um die herum das institutionentheoretische Potential der EC organisiert ist. Dabei wird die so genannte 'Neue Institutionenökonomik' durch die EC als kritischer Bezug herangezogen. Insgesamt soll damit ein Ansatz präsentiert werden, der in umfassender Weise wirtschaftssoziologische und institutionentheoretische Forschung innovativ integrieren kann, was in Frankreich anhand einer Vielzahl von empirischen und theoretischen Arbeiten auch erfolgt ist. ; 'The article presents the French approach of Economics of convention (économie des conventions, in short: EC). The EC-approach answers these questions on the basis of an innovative set of concepts. These concepts and the way of their application can be viewed as the contribution of EC to institutionalism. "Die sozialwissenschaftliche Netzwerkanalyse hat sich in den 1970er Jahren formiert und seitdem als ein eigenes empirisches Paradigma für die Analyse sozialer Beziehungssysteme etabliert. In diesem Beitrag werden der theoretisch-methodologische Standort der Netzwerkanalyse ('strukturale Analyse') und die verschiedenen Formen der Netzwerkanalyse vorgestellt. Die strukturale Analyse argumentiert, dass soziale Akteure und soziale Beziehungen in Netzwerke eingebettet sind und dass das Handeln und Wahrnehmen von Akteuren und die Performanz sozialer Beziehungen durch die Netzwerkstruktur beeinflusst werden. Seit den 1990er Jahren sind in die strukturale Analyse Konzepte wie das der agency, dasjenige des Diskurses und das der Symbolorientierung aufgenommen worden und haben die strukturale Analyse damit geöffnet. Hieran schließt ein Trend der zunehmenden Aufnahme qualitativer Verfahren in die Netzwerkanalyse an. Diese dienen insbesondere der Einbeziehung der Akteursperspektive in die Netzwerkanalyse, der Exploration von Netzwerken sowie der verstehenden Analyse der Netzwerkdynamiken. Der von Betina HOLLSTEIN und Florian STRAUS herausgegebene Band 'Qualitative Netzwerkanalyse' versammelt zwanzig überwiegend empirische Beiträge, die die Leistungsfähigkeit der Kombination quantitativer und qualitativer Verfahren in der Netzwerkanalyse in verschiedenen Anwendungsfeldern belegen. In diesem Beitrag wird untersucht, wie es gelingt, die Perspektive der strukturalen Analyse hierbei umzusetzen und weiterzuentwickeln. 'Der Beitrag rekonstruiert die von Gaston Bachelard begründete Tradition der französischen Epistemologie als eine zentrale methodologische Grundlage der Foucaultschen Diskursanalyse. Grundkonzepte und die Methodologie der französischen Epistemologie bilden eine Kontinuität in den Arbeiten Michel Foucaults. Die Epistemologie von Bachelard (und seinem Nachfolger Georges Canguilhem) kann für Rekonstruktionen der Foucaultschen Methodologie herangezogen werden und die Forschungspraxis der Foucaultschen Diskursanalyse als einer eigenständigen Form der qualitativen Sozialforschung anleiten. Die französische Epistemologie ist insbesondere in kritischer Distanz zur Phänomenologie von Edmund Husserl und als Gegenprogramm zu dessen phänomenologischer Erkenntnis- und Wissenschaftstheorie entwickelt worden. Da die Husserlsche Phänomenologie auch eine methodologische Grundlage der Sozialphänomenologie bereitstellt, zeigt sich in der Rekonstruktion der Einflüsse der französischen Epistemologie auf die Foucaultsche Diskursanalyse deren paradigmatische Distanz zu sozialphänomenologischen Ansätzen. Die Epistemologie Bachelards wird als eine Protoversion der Diskursanalyse aufgefasst. Diskurse als auch Diskursanalysen werden als sozio-epistemologische Praxisformen begriffen.
