The study of the urban experience in Lisbon, the former capital of the Portuguese empire, creates a specific observatory to interpret the colonial process and its post-colonial developments. Following an itinerary from colonial to post-colonial times, this article examines the continuities and discontinuities of Lisbon's urban dynamics linked with Portugal's colonial history through three interlinked processes. First, the material inscription of policies of national identity in the memory space of the city since the late nineteenth century until today. Second, the expansion of a network of economic relations that affected Lisbon's industrial, commercial and urban life. And finally, the development of a system of social and political organization, where spatial distribution and civil and political rights were unequally distributed. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

; In this text about the work of Historical Sociologist Barrington Moore Jr., his research program is analyzed, especially the way in which he proficiently mobilized the comparative method to understand longue durée historical processes. This program reached its full completion in his seminal work The Social Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy: Lord and Peasant in the Making of the Modern World (1966), in which Moore Jr. illuminates the diversity of trajectories that lead to modernity. This text also delivers an ampler assessment of the international academic field and, more specifically, of the relationships between the university and the political sphere. Provider of a marked originality in his historical reasoning, ...
In late 2019, Allen and Barbara Isaacman were in Portugal to conduct research on Samora Machel – guerrilla fighter and first president of the People's Republic of Mozambique – which led to the book Samora Machel. A life cut short. Since the late 1960s, Allen and Barbara Isaacman have been working on what is now the territory of Mozambique, developing one of the most extensive and solid researches on the history of Africa. Their analyses focus on African political and social structures, the process of Portuguese colonial occupation, and how it affected the lives of African populations. In their books, archival knowledge and oral sources support a historiography concerned with the analysis of field processes, namely with the intention of bringing to the forefront the practices, expectations, and worldviews of the local populations. The conversation took place on October 15-17, 2019. Over several hours of recording, we talked about their personal, academic and political path. The lessons we took away from this conversation are varied and bear upon Barbara and Allen Isaacman's generosity, ethical elevation, analytical rigor, and sense of solidarity with the Mozambican people. A life cut short.
