These copies of letters from John Gardiner and Nathaniel Dominy (1737-1813) respond to a request from New York Colony Governor William Tryon. Tryon asked for a list of East Hampton Town residents who were absent from their homes, along with information about any renters or rental agreements they might have. Tryon may have been trying to collect information about who had left Suffolk County to support the rebels fighting in New England, in what would later be known as the early battles of the American Revolution. In his reply, John Gardiner indicates that East Hampton Town surveyor Nathaniel Dominy has been tasked with the job of creating the inventory. Dominy's letter includes his signature and explains to Tryon that not all of the information Tryon wants is available. A partial list of names is provided.
