Is small-holder cultivation viable?: A question of political economy with reference to Thailand

After setting out three main conceptions - neo-classical, reformist and Marxist - in respect of traditional small-holder agriculture and its prospects, the article inquires whether owner-operated small-holdings are giving way on a substantial scale to tenant farms or large estates, if the income gap is widening between landless labourers and small-holders, on the one hand, and richer farmers, on the other etc. in Thailand. What role politics can play, either in sustaining or undermining small-holder production, is discussed. (DÜI-Sen)
