Comments on Douglas S. Massey & Emilio A. Parrado's "International Migration and Business Formation in Mexico" (1998), which traces the importance for Mexican citizens of money earned through international migration to the incomes & local business opportunities of individuals back home. Though results demonstrate the importance of dollar exports from the US to Mexican business formation, the importance of local resources & cultural expectations, particularly for issues of technology transfers & currency devaluations, has been neglected. Based on 25 years of research in Mexican agrarian communities, it is argued that family & friendship networks represent an important factor in capital investment & employment patterns. D. Ryfe
