Objectives: To characterize the prevalence of chronic cardiovascular conditions and risk factors among Arab American adults stratified by sex and compare these with non-Hispanic Whites.Design: Cross-sectional study using electronic health record data from visits be­tween January 2015 and December 2016. Age-adjusted prevalence estimates were cal­culated for men and women and compared using generalized linear models.Setting: Kaiser Permanente health plan in Northern California.Participants: Non-Hispanic White (N=969,566) and Arab American (N=18,072) adult members.Main Outcome Measures: Sex-stratified prevalence and prevalence ratios of diabe­tes, pre-diabetes, hypertension, and hyper­lipidemia diagnosed by December 2016 and of obesity, ever smoking, and current smoking status.Results: Arab American men had a significantly higher prevalence of ever smoking (41.8 vs 40.8%), diabetes (17.3 vs 12.5%), and hyperlipidemia (40.8 vs 34.7%) than White men, but a significantly lower prevalence of obesity (34.4 vs 37.8%) and hypertension (30.5 vs 33.3%). Arab American women had a significantly higher prevalence of diabetes (11.1 vs 8.7%) and hyperlipidemia (31.5 vs 28.3%) than White women but significantly lower prevalence of obesity (31.0 vs 34.2%), ever smoking (24.8 vs 34.5%), and hypertension (25.8 vs 28.4%).Conclusions: Hospital and health systems should intentionally collect data on Middle Eastern and North African ethnicity in electronic health records to identify and reduce the disparities this minority group faces.Ethn Dis. 2021;31(2):235-242; doi:10.18865/ed.31.2.235

The purpose of the study on which this article is based was to determine the current extent of linkages among Canadian community health nursing researchers and decision makers and to identify perceptions around the structure and function of potential networks. A qualitative research design was utilised to develop common themes across focus groups, a workshop and key informant interviews. The findings suggest that there is a need for a formal community health network to provide an efficient and timely means to link the expertise required to tackle complex community health policy problems, and to create supports for advancing community health science with relevant and high quality research.

The rights that the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) enumerates include the rights to (1) an adequate standard of living, (2) an education directed toward the development of the child's fullest potential, (3) the highest attainable standard of health, and (4) the child's own cultural identity and use of his or her own language. The CRC states that these rights shall be ensured regardless of various statuses of children, including race, ethnic origin, national origin, and language. This article presents a statistical baseline for assessing the diversity of children in the United States with regard to these statuses, presents results for statistical indicators of well-being for children distinguished by these statuses, and discusses public policies to reduce inequalities relevant to these rights. Résumé Des études montrent, en situation écologique mais également expérimentale, que les comportements d'orientation sociale seraient réduits chez les enfants avec TSA. Nous proposons d'étudier le développement des compétences d'orientation sociale dans ces deux situations chez 13 enfants avec TSA d'âge préscolaire afin de faire le lien entre les compétences lors d'une tâche expérimentale et les comportements en situation de vie quotidienne. Les enfants ont été filmés tous les mois en classe dans des situations d'interaction afin d'observer leurs comportements d'attention visuelle dirigés vers un adulte (annotés à l'aide du logiciel The Observer XT10 Noldus). En parallèle, ces mêmes enfants participent à une tâche de préférence visuelle entre un visage et un objet en oculométrie. Sur le plan longitudinal, une diminution du nombre de fixations vers les visages en oculométrie est liée avec une amélioration de la durée d'orientation sociale en classe. La progression des enfants peut être mise en lien avec leur niveau de base à la tâche, ainsi qu'avec le score obtenu aux échelles de l'ECSP en début de suivi.
