As the first step in rethinking infrastructure configurations and their alternatives, this thesis aims at looking into the existing policy framework that governs electricity supply in Khartoum, its implementation and how it's experienced by Khartoum's residents. By zooming into one locality in Khartoum, the "Eastern Nile Locality", the research has attempted to analyse the ways with which the limited electricity infrastructure is planned and allocated through its translation into policy frameworks in neighbouring areas falling under different zoning classification that correspond to their residents' income brackets. Review of the policy framework was conducted firstly, using a mix of desktop research and interviews with officials from the relevant institutions, investigating the key guidelines that govern electricity distribution across the various residential zones in terms of no/access to the grid, tariff regimes, contractual arrangements, alternative configurations and so on. The second part of the research was using ethnographic research methodologies to examine users' experience of electricity supply in its material and non-material dimensions. The studied cases revealed three main user categories; firstly, those grid-connected via the standard producers set by the Electricity Distribution Company. The second are those gridconnected via emerging models that could be classified as micro-financed co-production gridconnection. The third are those who remain off-grid and follow alternative routes. These varying regimes of service delivery are experienced by Khartoum residents on multiple levels, the most significant of which are firstly linked to users' experience of electricity as an unrivalled energy form that could be converted into a multiplicity of other forms, or its functional dimension as a modern technology that dis/enables greater space-time manipulation. Secondly, its more symbolic or representational aspects and their translation into social codes that define modern citizens and modernized states. Lastly, users' experience has pointed to the close link that the users make between electricity and the different relations that they form in their endeavors to access power services as in the different set of financial, legal, institutional and social relations and their implications in shaping subjectivities and articulating political positions.

During the industrial production of ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) biofuel, this ether forms an azeotropic mixture containing 20 wt% of ethanol. Compared to the ternary distillation currently used for ETBE purification, the pervaporation membrane process could offer an interesting alternative and important energy savings. Cellulosic membranes have been mainly reported for this application. In particular, the selectivity of cellulose acetate (CA) was outstanding but its flux was too low. In this work, different grafting strategies were developed for improving the CA membrane properties for ETBE purification. The first strategy used "click" chemistry to graft CA with polylactide oligomers leading to original bio-based membranes for the targeted application. The grafting of ionic liquids onto CA was then investigated first by "click" chemistry (unsuccessful due to side reactions) and then by another two-step strategy implying simple nucleophilic substitution. A second series of cellulosic materials was obtained by grafting different ionic liquids containing the same bromide anion and different cations (imidazolium, pyridinium or ammonium) with increasing polar feature. A third series of new membrane materials was finally developed by exchanging the bromide anion with different anions Tf2N-, BF4-, and AcO-. The membrane properties of all grafted CA membranes were finally assessed on the basis of the sorption-diffusion model, which revealed that both sorption and pervaporation properties were improved by the different grafting strategies ; Lors de la production industrielle du biocarburant éthyl tert-butyl éther (ETBE), cet éther forme un azéotrope contenant 20 % d'éthanol. With the propagation of COVID-19 worldwide, its new strains are also emanating. Consequently, the healthcare workers are persistently monitoring these mutations with grave concern.1 Epsilon variant also called as CAL.20C which is new strain of SARs-COV-2 virus originated and was first detected in California, United States of America (USA) in July 2020 .2,3 Originated from California, this variant is currently in approximately more than 35 countries and was prevalent in the United States.4,5 After processing 23 samples in a reference lab of the Provincial Government, Punjab, it was corroborated by the Health Authority about the existence of the novel variant. Out of 23 samples, five were validated as positive with California Epsilon strain reported in Lahore. According to the medical experts, the patient takes several weeks to recuperate from Epsilon strain in contrast with the other types of infections. Medical pantheons opine that this Epsilon variant found in Lahore is highly contagious and communicable as the Delta variant and this variant is said to be 20 per cent more transmissible. Epsilon strain identified in Lahore, --- city of Pakistan --- was highly contagious and highly communicable as the its counterpart, the Delta variant. Sarah Aslam serving as Secretary Punjab Primary & Secondary Healthcare Department admonished about the menacing situation of the novel California Epsilon strain unearthed in Lahore. Adding her stance, she stated that her department accumulated 23 suspicious samples of which five of them were detected positive for Epsilon.
