This chapter considers the relations of individuals, in the guise of individual transnational researchers, and transnational societies, with special reference to transnational research and projects. 'The transnational' is used here as the central motif for writing, reflecting, remembering and paying tribute to Marina Blagojević Hughson. This focus includes how different framings, worldviews and disciplinary understandings of the transnational, and indeed the semiperipheral, are mediated and embodied in and by individual researchers and researches. A multi-level, interactional approach to theory/practice is outlined, considered in relation to the work of and collaborations with Marina Blagojević Hughson. In particular, the chapter examines the interactions of both the empirical and normative-philosophical-political framings of 'the transnational', within which individuals live and work, and which construct individuals, with the lives and social constructions of transnational researchers, the operation of transnational research projects and methods, and the formation of substantive transnational fields and focuses. The final section discusses key cross-cutting themes recognised here as important in Marina Blagojević Hughson's work and collaborations, as well as for understanding the relations of transnational individuals and transnational societies, and developing transnational feminist research. This chapter interrogates political masculinities as agents for change through the prism of absence, without the polis. Following an initial discussion of political masculinities in relation to, first, mainstream politics, and, then, feminism, possible changes in political masculinities formed through absence, and their implications for profeminist men's politics, are interrogated. Three main forms of absence are examined: absences by transnational/global processes, beyond the nation; technological absences, of virtuality and disembodiment in cyberspace; and bodily absences, as, for example, with ageing. These changes, and moreover their interconnections, are seen as creating new gender power structures, but also offering some signs of hope, with greater transnational connections, collaborations and indeed new subversive political masculinities.

This article reflects on the ten-year long series of one-day conferences, Maskulinitet i förändring [Masculinity in change] organised by Länsstyrelsen i Örebro län (county), beginning in 2010, in terms of considering these questions: is this a unique phenomenon and achievement? How do we explain it? How do we understand it? In response, the main issues discussed are: the context of and background to the conferences series; the nature of conferences themselves; relations to the state and local state; geographical location; framings and words used in organising the conferences; political and policy orientations of the conferences; the range and gender of invited speakers; the frequency of working across sectoral boundaries; topics addressed and possible gaps; and the impact and interrelations of key individual and institutions.

Following introductory remarks on how the terms "masculinities" and "men" have been used differentially in recent critical studies on men and masculinities (CSMM), the article reviews some key aspects of CSMM - past, present and future. The diverse influences on CSMM have included various feminisms, gay studies, anti-imperialism, civil rights, anti-racism, green and environmental movements, as well as LGBTIQ+ movements, Critical Race Studies, Globalization/Transnational Studies, and Intersectionality Studies. In the present period, the range of theoretical and political approaches and influences on studies continues to grow, with, for example, queer, post-, post post-, new materialist, posthumanist, and science and technology studies, making for some discontinuities with established masculinities theory. In many regions, there are now more women working explicitly and long-term in the area, even if that is itself not new. CSMM have also become more geographically widespread, more dispersed, more comparative, international, transnational, postcolonial, decolonializing, globally "Southern", global, globalized and globalizing; this diversifying feature is transforming CSMM. Key areas for future research are identified, including the relations of men and masculinities to: first, ecology, environment and climate change; second, ICTs, social media, AI, robotics and big data; third, transnational/global, transnational institutions and processes; and, fourth, nationalism, racism, authoritarianism, neo-fascism and political masculinism. Together, these make for a "lurking doom". At the same time, there is a whole range of wider theoretical, methodological, epistemological and ontological questions to be taken up in CSMM much more fully in the future.

In recent years, there has been a large, perhaps surprising, growth of critical studies on men and masculinities, across the humanities and social sciences, and to a more limited extent in the natural sciences and technology, along with a variety of political and policy interventions on men and masculinities. In this paper, I examine some of the ways in which a critical gendered focus on men and masculinities can both re-centre men and de-centre men, paying particular attention to the central themes of politics, representation and care. A key challenge is how to name men and masculinities, and at the same time deconstruct men and masculinities, to avoid potential re-centrings of power, at the local, national and transnational levels. Finally, and in these contexts and with these contradictions, I consider the possibilities and pitfalls of the abolition of "men" as social category of power, with special reference to questions of age, ageing and the body. ; Special issue: Hombres en movimiento: representaciones, políticas y cuidados [Men in movement: representations, policies and care]

Principally, gerunds and participles can either invoke agency and agentic action, or can refer to process with less explicit attention to individual agency. Examples of both agentic and process approaches to organizing, managing, and designing are given. The final section addresses dilemmas, possibly new dilemmas, in such approaches, in terms of: the onset of new and/or not so new realities?; the politics and/or the ontology of process itself?; and the local and/or the transnational?

This article provides a brief overview of Critical Studies on Men and Masculinities (CSMM), a broad sub-field of Feminist Studies, Gender Studies, and Women's Studies, and some of the tensions and contradictory processes there. The main body of the article explores two major contemporary challenges for CSMM. The first concerns the conceptual and political move from masculinities, and hegemonic masculinity, to the hegemony of men. The second addresses the move from the ethnographic moment to global and transnational processes, and specifically the transformations of patriarchy from the local and the national to the transnational, as summed up in the term trans(national)patriarchies. Characteristics features of such transpatriarchies are examined. Challenging both the relations of men and masculinities and the relations of local and transnational patriarchies are key tasks for CSMM.
