A consideration of political order & universal values in the 21st century examines the importance of politics & political order & contrasts the "political good" with the "political evil" that has characterized the last 100 years in terms of both unprecedented violence/oppression & unprecedented freedom/prosperity. It is maintained that domestic & international order is primarily based on shared political values; however, complete uniformity of political values is not necessary for political stability & a peaceful international order. Attention is called to the increased vulnerability of interdependent & technology-based modern societies, as well as the need to work toward a "good political order" at both domestic & international levels. Although humanitarian principles alone are not enough to implement the universal values needed for a better & safer world in the 21st century, they are an essential ingredient of the good society because they promote solidarity, & prevent reprehensible actions on the part of individuals & nations.
