El artículo presenta un análisis demográfico de las grandes empresas en Argentina con el fin de identificar sus niveles de rotación y de perdurabilidad en distintas coyunturas históricas desde la primera globalización hasta el final de la industrialización dirigida por el Estado. La aplicación de una mirada dinámica y nominal de la población de las 200 mayores empresas del país entre 1913 y 1971 desde un enfoque inspirado en el campo de la demografía empresarial se orienta a indagar en la relación entre los cambios y permanencias de las grandes empresas en la cúpula empresarial y las transformaciones de la economía argentina. El análisis identifica un elevado grado de turbulencia en la cúpula empresarial en el largo plazo, el cual es más elevado que lo identificado por estudios similares en otros países. También se identifica un núcleo estable de empresas súper longevas que sobrevivieron durante todo el periodo analizado.

The case focuses on the historical trajectory of SIAM Di Tella, an Argentinian company that became Latin America's largest metal-mechanical signature in the middle of the 20th century. It is a paradigmatic example of an enterprise in the period of Industrialisation for Replacement of Imports (ISI), at which stage the state encouraged industrialisation for the domestic market as a development strategy. As such, it provides relevant information to discuss the responses provided by businesses to the opportunities and obstacles presented by a context characterised by high levels of regulation and uncertainty. On the basis of a critical analysis of the evolution of SIAM, it will be possible to rebuild and discuss central aspects of Argentina's business system for much of the 20th century, defining as such the system of coordination of economic activities. This unique book compares the effects of globalization on two differing Latin American countries, Argentina and Chile, while utilizing both the historical lens of the late nineteenth century and the status of the modern economy to draw its conclusions. Focusing on these two eras of globalization, leading business historians based in Europe, Latin America, and the United States examine the impact of multinationals, the growth of business groups, and the conflicted relations between business and government. Specifically, this book provides a compelling new historical perspective on current economic and political crises in Argentina and Chile. This article examines the interlocking directorates' structure of prominent Argentine business groups at the end of the import substitution period (1970–72), identifying corporate relations among and between business groups and the largest companies, during a period characterised by high institutional and macroeconomic instability. Applying social network analysis, it seeks to clarify how business groups can contribute to the cohesion of a corporate network structure, through their ability to create links among firms not only within their boundaries but also external to them. The article contributes to both corporate network and business groups' literature, highlighting a role of business groups that extant literature has failed to identify as relevant.
