Standards are an increasingly powerful mechanism for the governing of economic, political and social life. Yet there has been little sustained attention by social scientists to how standards and standardizing projects are articulated and rendered workable in practice. This innovative book is the first of its kind to examine the dynamics of standardization work, and the objects, subjects and forms of governing to which this gives rise. Drawing upon post-realist approaches of governmentality and actor network theory, contributors provide detailed case studies which highlight how standards configure, and are configured through, local practices; the complexity of standardizing processes which contribute to harmonization at the same time as creating distinction and difference; and, the new forms of identity, subjectivity and social organization that emerge through standardizing work.

Analyses of activism have inspired geographers for many years, but most of this work has focused on relatively short time-frames, events and struggles. This paper suggests that there is much to be gained from a greater engagement with issues of time and time—spaces. It outlines and applies the contrasting conceptions of chrono/ chora and kairo/ topos notions of time—space as potentially useful ways to interrogate geographies of activism. The paper focuses on two specific forms of activism—an Australian women's 'Heritage Project' and a New Zealand 'Fishbowl' evaluation of a community development programme— to show how politics is contingent on diverse temporal as well as spatial conditions. It reveals the complex navigations that are made as these politics are negotiated via both mutual learning processes and the forging of new activist—state relations. It is concluded that these 'timely partnerships' have involved moving beyond adversarial conceptions of 'state' and 'activist', but at the risk of reconstituting activism as 'social capital'.

This paper arises out of research on the New Zealand designer fashion industry. An unexpected success story, this export-oriented industry is dominated by women as designers, employees, wholesale and public relations agents, industry officials, fashion writers and editors, in addition to women holding more traditionally gendered roles as garment workers, tastemakers and consumers. Our analysis of the gendered globalization of the New Zealand fashion industry exposes a number of disconnections between women's positions in this industry and the literatures on globalization, clothing and fashion. We argue that the New Zealand designer fashion industry not only embodies new ways of working associated with the movement of first world women into the labour force, but its very success is underpinned by these changes. Our conclusion is that more work is needed to explicate links between globalization and first world women's entry into the labour force.
