Abstract
This article argues that, notwithstanding views to the contrary, Frédéric Bastiat (Bayonne, 1801; Rome, 1850) was indeed a man of science. Thus, in several of his essays he showed that political economy can attain a level of scientific rigor comparable in many respects to that of the natural sciences. Subscribing to the principle of methodological individualism, he offered some persuasive explanations for why people believe in a multitude of things. After examining science as Bastiat conceived it, we shall look at two important examples, mechanization and rational voting.

Raymond Boudon a été l'un des rares sociologues, surtout en France, à placer l'individu au centre de ses analyses. Il n'a pourtant pas été, contrairement à une idée reçue, un théoricien du choix rationnel. Dès les années 1970, alors qu'il est encore en début de carrière, il a proposé, du moins c'était son souhait, une théorie plus générale, de plus vaste portée, qui conjuguait la rationalité instrumentale et la neutralité axiologique, où le comportement des acteurs sociaux ne devenait intelligible qu'en tenant compte de ses croyances et de ses motivations. Rien de mécanique dans le social, aux yeux de Boudon, qui a sans cesse été soucieux d'inscrire sa propre démarche dans le prolongement de ce que la sociologie classique avait de meilleur à offrir. S'agissant de la rationalité du politique, ce n'est ni Marx ou Comte qui offraient les analyses les plus satisfaisantes, mais Weber et plus particulièrement Tocqueville. Ainsi, la « science politique nouvelle » de l'auteur de La Démocratie en Amérique, permettait à Boudon de mieux comprendre la démocratie et le libéralisme, de même qu'elle mettait en lumière les possibles dérapages du relativisme.

La démarche de Fernand Dumont, si on la suit en détail, est compliquée, sinueuse; elle s'inspire d'une telle diversité de courants théoriques qu'à première vue il devient parfois difficile de s'y retrouver, comme si chacun des nombreux problèmes qu'il a traités appelait la nécessité de se référer à un corpus intellectuel particulier. Dumont a beaucoup lu. Alors que sa pensée est en pleine gestation, au moment même où il s'initie au savoir sociologique dans la première partie des années 1950, il fait des découvertes fécondes et décisives. Très tôt, parmi les fondateurs de la pensée sociologique, il est particulièrement fasciné par Émile Durkheim. Il est autant séduit par l'architecture théorique de l'œuvre que par ses larges vues ou par la profondeur de l'analyse. Mais ce n'est pas tout : contrairement à Marx ou à Weber, par exemple, Durkheim a la particularité et le mérite d'avoir fondé une école, groupée autour de L'Année sociologique, qui rassemble quelques-uns des plus brillants jeunes esprits de la Troisième République, comme Marcel Mauss, Célestin Bougie, François Simiand et Maurice Halbwachs. En étudiant les travaux des membres de l'École française de sociologie, Dumont découvre d'innombrables matériaux qui lui permettront de donner une profondeur supplémentaire à sa propre pensée.

For a quarter of a century now, and more particularly over the last decade, Maurice Halbwachs has inspired a growing literature embodied by many sociologists and historians of social sciences, published for the most part in scientific journals, focusing on the sociological thought that Halbwachs developed in his writings. Then come many studies that emerge from the history of ideas and epistemology: these are entirely devoted to a particular facet of Halbwachs' work, either to place it in its scientific context or to discuss it on the basis of fundamental cognitive issues. Our task is not to summarize or synthesize the thinking of Halbwachs, which would be far too vast an undertaking for an exercise of this kind. He was keenly aware of the most pressing epistemological and methodological questions surrounding the nascent sociology. He thought about the place of demography in the study of social life; he posed the problem of the role of psychology; and he considered the application of statistics. Better yet, he asked what a society really is: a kind of 'organization' trying to last and preserve itself, adapting to the conditions of its environment. There is no doubt that Halbwachs contributed to the emergence of sociology especially after World War I. His studies have always been innovative, part of the intellectual debates at the moment. In particular, his work invests the question of knowing if it was possible to study in a positive way human spirit, and especially intellectual faculties.

Political and economic liberalism has generally been considered to be of marginal import in France, but at an intellectual level, it is a different story. An exploration of the history of French economic thought shows how a rich intellectual tradition developed during the nineteenth century, which has been previously neglected in English language studies of French thinking. In this important new collection, Robert Leroux brings together key works, both from widely regarded and lesser known authors, whose thinking constituted the core of a singular intellectual movement.
