ABSTRACTThis paper introduces some distinctions related to facts and values, indicates some of the uses and misuses of these distinctions, and draws conclusions for the problem of rational decision making. A major claim is that everyone but metaphysicians should forget about the fact‐value distinction and get on with the pursuit of truth and the performance of good deeds.

The goal here is to introduce some of the basic ideas & issues related to social indicators research. Definitions of `social indicator', 'social report' & 'social accounting system' are proposed, & their structural features are explained. This is followed by an explanation of the usage of the phrase 'quality of life' & its relation to the writer's view of the nature of values. A number of possible uses & abuses of social indicators & reports are introduced. None of this material breaks new ground, but perhaps it will be useful as a jumping off point for further research.
