Survival of the Ministers: On Ministerial Durability in Postwar Norway
In: Scandinavian political studies, Band 40, Heft 2, S. 182-206
ISSN: 1467-9477
The field of ministerial durability, showing why some ministers are dismissed and others not, has increased in size over the last decade. Specifically, linking ministerial performance through resignation calls with durability has been applied to both majoritarian and semi‐presidential systems, whereas this link is less explored in consensual electoral systems. Thus, this study explores the relationship between ministerial performance and durability in postwar Norway, drawing on the principal‐agent theory for parliamentary democracies and the accountability link between party leaders and ministers. The main finding is that there are many similarities to other studies' ministerial durability and performance. By measuring performance in resignation calls coming through the media, it is found that ministerial durability is decreased when performance is low: the more resignation calls a minister gets, the more likely the minister is to be removed by the party leader. Consequently, it is argued that ministers generally are held accountable by their party leaders whenever they are perceived to perform badly. Even though it is argued in the article that studies on ministerial durability and performance would benefit from alternative performance measures, the analysis shows that resignation calls give a good indication of how party leaders hold ministers accountable.

Abstract
This article describes one way that unknown and 'emerging' artists with limited exhibition history or reputation take steps towards developing their careers. Artists cannot apply directly for exhibition opportunities, therefore they develop social associations with gallerists that are described as being 'kind-of-friendly-with'. Using a descriptive ethnographic narrative drawn from a case study of artists as they navigate an evening of commercial gallery openings in New York's Chelsea district, it is argued that establishing a career in contemporary visual art depends on the ability to render one's self visible to other participants in an art world. Rather than viewing the symbolic value of artworks as antagonistic with the economic art market, artists seek to establish social associations in which different forms of value are interrelated. In conclusion it is suggested that this is an art world in which the 'economic world reversed' is inversed.

I denne artikkelen viser jeg, gjennom tekstanalytiske metoder, hvordan amerikanske presidenter vektlegger de to tradisjonene 'tilbakeholden' og 'ekspansiv' liberalisme i sine State of the Union-taler. Denne dreiningen knyttes opp mot de kollektive tradisjonene forst skissert i Monroe-doktrinen og i 'Roosevelt corollary' Presidents' balance between liberal values based on imposition and restraint have major implications for foreign policy outcomes. In this article, I use text analytical tools to show how American presidents weigh Liberalism of Imposition and Liberalism of Restraint differently in State of the Union speeches. I use content analysis to map the focus on foreign policy and, based on a coding scheme, ideational analysis to assess which of the liberal traditions are more vocal in six of the speeches. Findings indicate that a shift has occurred from a balanced approach to more imposition-based ideas. Furthermore, I argue that these ideas can be traced back to the collective traditions drawn in the Monroe doctrine and Roosevelt corollary. Adapted from the source document.
