The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen represents a historical hallmark and a political referent. Hannah Arendt is a lucid observer of the link that is established between the principle of the rights of man and citizenship, the belonging to a political community; but this is based on being born in a territory. For those who cannot brandish this belonging or who have been dispossessed of it, these rights are an abstraction without any validity.

Lessing's Nathan the Wise (1778) provides the basis for a discussion of tolerance. The story, set during the Crusades, is related, noting the philosophical debate on truth beneath the dramatic dialogues between the three major monotheistic faiths & pondering Lessing's use of a medieval model to explain enlightened tolerance as well as why Nathan is a Jew. Nathan's Jewishness is perhaps a nod to Lessing's friend Moses Mendelssohn, seen as the epicenter of Haskala, a Jewish Enlightenment movement. The tension between Jewishness & Enlightenment modernity is then addressed in terms of parallel phenomena the 19th-century development of Haskala & the 20th-century "Jewish question." Attention is given to the Society for the Science of Judaism & Bildung, with their roots in Haskala. From this, Franz Rosenzweig's reading of Nathan the Wise, which he used to explain his "new thinking" regarding the direction of the Enlightenment project, is examined. There are three conceptions of tolerance, represented by three distinct types of Nathan -- Nathan of Saladin's court, Nathan of Lessing, & the Jewish Nathan -- which share the idea that truth is practical verification. The salience of any of them to current circumstances is briefly considered, noting that intolerance lacks the religious label of yore & that the concept of tolerance has lost epistemic status for being overworked.
