The old German labor movement, torn between the choices of destroying or serving capitalism, was destroyed by its lack of commitment to either. WWI revealed this movement, like others, to be largely enmeshed in the framework of bourgeois society. The Spartakusbund, despite its opposition to the conservatism of the German Wc, was not willing to take power against their will, as had the Bolsheviks; the spontaneous demands of the Wc in the German Revolution remained with the bourgeois framework. The Communist Party of Germany, which had adopted a parliamentary & trade-union policy against the intent of its founders, soon suppressed the left opposition. This opposition also viewed the domination of international communism by the Bolsheviks as due to political error grounded in the peculiarities of the Russian situation. The proletarian elements in both the Russian & German revolutions were soon suppressed. The German 'ultra-left' survived largely in its theoretical work until the collapse of the labor movement. Its activities proved the only consistent German struggle against capitalism. W. H. Stoddard.
