Der Beitrag rekonstruiert, wie sich das politische Denken bzw. die politische Theoriebildung in Großbritannien während der 90er entwickelt und gewandelt hat. Der entscheidende Impuls ging davon aus, den stagnierenden Thatcherismus der 80er Jahre durch neue Konzeptionen zu überwinden. Mitte der 90er Jahre legten John Gray und Anthony Giddens zwei alternative gesellschaftspolitische Modelle zur Überwindung der Stagnation vor. Beide äußerten sowohl Kritik am konservativen, neoliberalen Thatcherismus als auch an den politischen Konzeption der Sozialdemokratie der Nachkriegszeit. Beide Denker suchten nach einem "Dritten Weg" zwischen Neoliberalismus und Sozialdemokratie, wie er sich inzwischen im "Blairismus" manifestiert. Die Schwächen dieses Systems - die Verstärkung sozialer Ungleichheiten und die damit aufbrechende Frage nach der sozialen Gerechtigkeit - haben inzwischen jedoch zu neuen Grundsatzdebatten geführt.
