Pakistan on the front porch of conflict
In: Strategic digest, Band 16, Heft 4, S. 413-418
ISSN: 0970-017X
The article claims that it is the Soviet intention to destabilize South-west Asia and that this has placed Pakistan in a front-line against Soviet expansion. Its stability is also vital for preventing the Balkanization of the region. If Pakistan disappeared, the area would erupt into a conflagration the US would unlikely be able to influence. Pakistan's ultimate security is said to rest on three pillars: support from Islamic countries, support from China and planned nuclear weapons. A fourth pillar is needed, but still too weak: US commitment. (DÜI-Asd)
