Patterson, author of The Vanishing Voter, about a Shorenstein Center project that involved weekly national surveys to assess the involvement of Americans in the 2000 presidential election, Patterson indicates that the impact on political participation of the recent Right-Left polarization is yet to be determined. The influence of negative news coverage, the increase in negative political advertising, & the decline of the political party are examined as contributors to the downward trend in voter turnout. It is noted that the FL election debacle, coupled with a weak economy, would have seriously hurt the Bush presidency if it hadn't been for the terrorist attacks of 9/11 (2001). Other issues discussed include reasons for the rise in voter turnout in 1992; the possibility of election-day registration; the need for a stronger commitment from the media to air political debates; the potential impact of the Iraq War on voter participation; & ways the Shorenstein Center can help to lure more voters to the polls. As traditional institutions have weakened, the news media have been expected to carry more of the burden of organizing public opinion and debate. In general, however, the news agenda is an unsuitable basis for political action. There are always critical problems facing society, but whether they play a large or small part in the news, and do so in a true or distorted form, depends significantly on how they conform to the time-driven demands of the news cycle. The news is deliberately shortsighted, is rooted in novelty rather than precision, and focuses on fastbreaking events rather than enduring issues.
