This book addresses the "crisis of critique" of Frankfurt School Critical Theory in International Relations and puts forward a proposal for how it can be overcome. It starts from the premise that the present conjuncture, marked by capitalist crisis and a fracturing international order, urgently calls for critical perspectives capable of clarifying the state of global affairs and the emancipatory struggles within it. Critical Theory in International Relations should be well placed to provide answers to this demand, yet it finds itself today in a state of decline. Its prevailing form--that of a universalist cosmopolitan project--reflects a narrow Eurocentric perspective and the concerns of a time now past, while the Frankfurt School tradition as a whole struggles to develop new modes of analysis and new political imaginaries that are appropriate to the current historical situation. The book diagnoses this situation of intellectual and political crisis and seeks to trace a way out. It does so by providing a comprehensive account of the development of Critical Theory in International Relations and the ways in which it has applied Frankfurt School thought to the study of international politics. It then makes a provocative case as to the exhaustion of the cosmopolitan and Habermasian paradigm of critique that has guided Frankfurt School research on international politics for the past thirty years. Finally, it puts forward a proposal for the revitalisation of Critical Theory in IR through a renewed emphasis on the critique of political economy and sketches a research agenda which can make the tradition relevant again to contemporary political questions. Davide Schmid is a Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. His research sits at the intersection of Critical Theory and International Political Economy.

The achievements of Western democracies (equality, rule of law, social justice) are met with growing disdain. A hierarchical system, largely derived from the nation-state model, pits the (scorned) elites against the (disdained) people. Social give and take does not happen anymore, the situation is being made worse by social media.

On the basis of an examination of Kant's, Maimon's, and Schelling's metaphilosophies, this book investigates how, starting from Kant's diagnosis of a "groping metaphysics", a philosophical research program develops whose goal is to elucidate the nature and method of philosophy itself. Uniting their projects is the thesis that philosophy must begin with an investigation of its own nature, and that this investigation, because of its special object, must be accompanied by a reflection on its method. To this end, their methods are discussed on the assumption that they arise from a particular engagement with the theories and practices of the 18th century sciences. Finally, this discussion provides the basis for showing in what ways philosophical experiments, fictions, or models offer methodological solutions to the problem of developing a scientific metaphysics.

Organisations are involved in various types of negotiation. As digitalisation advances, such business negotiations are to a large extent electronic negotiations. Consequently, dedicated training for such electronic negotiations is important for mastering negotiation skills. The present book develops a new approach for a motivating and improved e-negotiation training by applying gamification, i.e. using game design elements in a non-game context, in order to improve participants' motivation, engagement, and learning outcomes. A negotiation support system used within an e-negotiation training is enhanced with game design elements. The book describes the design process, its theoretical foundations, and the evaluation of the gamified negotiation support system. The final quantitative evaluation shows higher motivation, engagement and better learning outcomes for participants in the gamified training compared to a conventional training. Organisations can employ the designed artefact for fundamental and effective e-negotiation training. Additionally, the book provides insights in how to design a gamified system for a particular application context. About the author Andreas Schmid was a research assistant at the Information Systems Department 1 - Organisational Communication at the University of Hohenheim, Germany, and is currently working as an IT specialist. His research interests include gamification, e-learning, negotiations, and software development.
