La investigación en personas jóvenes por personas jóvenes es una tendencia creciente y se considera una aproximación democrática para explorar sus vidas. La investigación cualitativa también es vista como una forma de redistribuir el poder; con la investigación participativa posicionada por muchos como un paradigma democrático de investigación cualitativa. Aunque la investigación participativa puede otorgar una visión de otro mundo, está lleno de una variedad de relaciones que requieren negociación y que necesitan constante auto reflexión. Al basarse en narraciones experimentales de investigación participativa con jóvenes, este documento explorará la relación de poder desde la perspectiva de un investigador adulto, del joven investigador par y también de los investigados. Explorará el cambio de poder autoconsciente y describirá como se renuncia a él y es reclamado con grados crecientes de obediencia en tanto se desarrolla la confianza y la seguridad. Co-escrito por el investigador par e investigadores adultos, el artículo ilustrará una variedad de ejemplos prácticos de investigación participativa con jóvenes, decodificará la lucha del poder y considerará las implicaciones. Research in young people by young people is a growing trend and considered a democratic approach to exploring their lives. Qualitative research is also seen as a way of redistributing power; with participatory research positioned by many as a democratic paradigm of qualitative inquiry. Although participatory research may grant a view on another world, it is fraught with a range of relationships that require negotiation and which necessitate constant self-reflection. Drawing on experiential accounts of participatory research with young people, this paper will explore the power relationship from the perspective of the adult researcher, the young peer researcher and also that of the researched. It will explore the self-conscious exchange of power; and describe how it is relinquished and reclaimed with increasing degrees of compliance as confidence and security develops. Co-authored by a peer researcher and adult researchers, this paper will illustrate a range of practical examples of participatory research with young people, decode the power struggle and consider the implications. It will argue that although the initial stages of the research process are artificial, self-conscious and undemocratic it concludes that the end may justify the means with the creation of social agency knowledge, experience and reality.

Ein Trend in der Jugendforschung findet sich in Studien, die von jungen Menschen selbst durchgeführt werden und einem demokratischen Selbstverständnis entsprechen. Qualitative Sozialforschung kann dabei als eine Möglichkeit betrachtet werden, den Machteinfluss innerhalb des Forschungsprozesses umzuverteilen, wobei Peer-Involvement-Modelle von vielen als ein demokratisches Forschungsparadigma angesehen werden. Obwohl Peer-Involvement-Modelle eine Sicht auf die Welt der anderen eröffnen können, sind sie geprägt von sozialen Abhängigkeiten und Beziehungen, die kontinuierlich (neu) verhandelt werden müssen und eine andauernde Selbstreflektion vonseiten der beteiligten Forscher/innen erfordern.Auf der Basis von Erfahrungsberichten über partizipative Forschungsprojekte versuchen wir in diesem Beitrag, die Machverhältnisse im Forschungsprozess aus der Perspektive aller Beteiligten – d.h. von akademischer Forscher/innen, Peer-Forscher/innen und Forschungsteilnehmer/innen – zu analysieren. Wir untersuchen den selbstreflexiven Umgang mit Machtverhältnissen im Forschungsprozess und beschreiben, wie im Projektverlauf parallel zur zunehmenden Entwicklung von Selbstbewusstsein und sicherheit aufseiten der Jugendlichen die Ausübung von Macht und Einfluss auf den Forschungsprozess von den Forscher/innen zurückgefordert wurde. In gemeinsamer Autor/innenschaft von zwei Sozialforscher/innen und einem jugendlichen Peer-Forscher illustriert dieser Beitrag an einer Reihe von praktischen Beispielen von Projekten mit Peer-Involvement-Modellen die Bemühungen um den Transfer der Einflussnahmemöglichkeiten auf die Gestaltung des Forschungsprojekts und dessen Konsequenzen. Wir argumentieren, dass, obwohl die Anfangsphase solcher Forschungsprozesse oft artifiziell und undemokratisch ist, das Ergebnis – namentlich die Erhöhung von Sozialkompetenz, sozialen Erfahrungen und sozialem Realitätssinn – diese Mittel rechtfertigen kann.

ARK (Access Research Knowledge) fue creado con un solo objetivo: hacer accesible información en ciencias sociales sobre Irlanda del Norte a la mayor audiencia posible. La parte del recurso ARK más conocida y utilizada globalmente es CAIN, que es una de las colecciones on-line más grandes de recursos materiales y de información sobre el conflicto norirlandés. La compilación de la sección de CAIN, titulada "Remembering: Victims, Survivors and Commemoration" (Recordando: Víctimas, supervivientes y conmemoración) planteó problemas sobre la sensibilidad del material, pues se nutre del debate fundamental sobre el legado del conflicto norirlandés. Además, ha hecho resurgir la cuestión sobre hasta qué punto archivar es una actividad neutral o política, y en qué medida se necesita un discurso sobre responsabilidad y ética entre los investigadores sociales. ARK ('Access Research Knowledge') was set up with a single goal: to make social science information on Northern Ireland available to the widest possible audience. The most well-known and widely used part of the ARK resource is CAIN (Conflict Archive on the INternet), which is one of the largest on-line collections of source material and information and about the Northern Ireland conflict. The compilation of CAIN's new Remembering: Victims, Survivors and Commemoration section raised issues related to the sensitivity of the material, as it feeds into the fundamental debate on the legacy of the Northern Ireland conflict. It also fundamentally raises the question to what extent archiving is a neutral or political activity and necessitates a discourse on responsibility and ethics among social researchers. Experiences from the establishment of the Northern Ireland Qualitative Archive (NIQA) shed light on future possibilities with regard to qualitative archives on the Northern Ireland conflict.

This article highlights the need for greater understanding of the role that historical and socio-cultural and political context may play in shaping perceptions of culture and cultural value (Kasynska, 2015). Findings draw on the 2016 Young Life and Times (YLT) survey, an annual attitudinal survey of 16-year olds in Northern Ireland, and four follow-up focus group discussions. The results complement existing research on cultural participation, which relates forms of engagement with factors, such as, age, location of residence, gender, and income (Bennett et al., 2009; Manchester & Pett, 2015; van Wel, et al., 2006). However, reflecting, to some degree, the specificities of the study's location in Northern Ireland, we also found that cultural participation and understandings of what counts as culture have strong connections to history, place, religion, tradition and family. Furthermore, while our research participants placed a high level of personal importance on the informal activities in which they engage on a daily basis, it was those activities associated with tradition and family, which they perceived as having higher cultural importance.

This paper focuses on the perspectives of a small sample of birth parents of young children who returned home from care. It draws on findings from the Northern Ireland Care Pathways and Outcomes Study that has been following a population (n = 374) of children who were under 5 years and in care in Northern Ireland on the 31st of March 2000. As part of this study, interviews were conducted with the foster parents of 55 children, the adoptive parents of 51 children and the birth parents of nine children who had returned home from care. The paper explores the birth parents' views on how they coped while their child was in care, how they were coping after the child had returned home and how their child was faring at home. Results revealed that these parents, and their children, were experiencing multiple difficulties and struggled to cope after the children had returned home.

Backgrounds and Aims: The Northern Ireland Youth Wellbeing Survey (NIYWS) was commissioned by the Health and Social Care Board (NI) with the aim of providing reliable prevalence estimates of the mental health problems of children and young people aged 2–19 years. Method: The NIYWS used a random probability design, stratified by deprivation decile and county, to ensure even geographical distribution and representation. The survey used a broad range of validated measures to identify children and young people who met established clinical criteria for common mood, anxiety and behaviour disorders, trauma related disorders, as well as those at risk of autism spectrum disorder, eating disorders, future psychotic illness, self-injury or suicide. Results: Data were collected on 3074 children and young people aged 2–19 years, as well as over 2800 parents. The survey achieved a high response rate (67%) and initial findings indicated that 11% of the sample were at risk of emotional or behavioural problems. Conclusions: The NIYWS was the first large scale nationally representative survey of the mental health of children and young people in NI. Despite the legacy of political violence the initial findings show comparable levels of emotional and behavioural problems to England.
