The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) is a practical environmental volunteering agency. Its daily engagement with local action provides it with insights not shared by policy makers who view the natural environment in isolation. This means that BCTV needs to engage with a variety of government departments. Environmental issues cannot be divorced from wider social and economic concerns. Effective policy making needs to be 'joined up' and informed by the practical insights of those working on the ground.
