Atkinson and Silverman's (1997) depiction of the Interview Society analysed the dominance of interview studies that seek to elicit respondents 'experiences' and 'perceptions'. Their article showed that this vocabulary is deeply problematic, assuming an over-rationalistic account of behaviour and a direct link between the language of people's accounts and their past and present psychic states. In this article, using a Constructionist approach, I develop these ideas, by asking what sort of data are we trying to retrieve through interviews, i.e. what do interviews reveal? I go on to examine and discount the claimed intellectual auspices for most interview studies and the way in which interview data are usually analysed. I conclude by showing how the reliability of interview transcripts can be improved and the analysis of interview data made more robust.

Many PhD students begin as unconscious Naturalists or Emotionalists using interview studies to report people's "experience" of an unquestioned social "problem." An analysis of articles in one journal shows that this naïve use of interview data has become the common currency of qualitative research. In a critique of one such article, I show how interview studies may simply reproduce interviewees' own accounts, glossed over by a few social science categories. By "mining" interviews for apposite extracts, such researchers lose sight of how sequence is consequential for what we say and do. Much more needs to be done if qualitative research is not to be just a set of techniques but an analytic project, different from journalism.

Zahlen können offenbar sprechen. Aufgrund ihrer kleinen Fallzahlen versuchen Qualitative Forscher und Forscherinnen deswegen, ihre Analysen durch Beispiele zu verdeutlichen und zu stützen. Deshalb werden in Forschungsberichten üblicherweise Datenauszüge präsentiert als "sprechende" Beispiele für den behaupteten Phänomenbereich. Diese scheinbare Evidenz führt dann aber zu dem Vorwurf des bloß Anekdotischen, d.h. dass genau jene Auszüge gewählt werden, die die eigene Position und Deutung bekräftigen. Diesem methodologischen Problem kann meines Erachtens dann am besten begegnet werden, wenn wir uns auf die Anteile unserer theoretischen Wurzeln besinnen, die darauf zielen, unsere Arbeit von der quantitativer Sozialforschung zu unterscheiden. Obwohl sich insbesondere die linguistische und strukturale Anthropologie auf SAUSSURE bezieht, gibt er eine schlichte Regel an die Hand, die prinzipiellere Gültigkeit hat: Unser Vertrauen in Beispiele tadelnd, schreibt SAUSSURE: Einzelne Elemente haben keine Bedeutung. Es hängt vielmehr davon ab, wie einzelne Elemente miteinander verknüpft werden. Eine Alltagsaktivität, in der die soziale Welt sich artikuliert, ist die Konstruktion von Sequenzen. Genauso wie Teilnehmende in einer Interaktion sich immer auf die sequenzielle Platzierung von "Ereignissen" beziehen (müssen), sollte dies auch in den Sozialwissenschaften der Fall sein. Anhand von Beispielen aus Fokusgruppen, Feldnotizen und Tonbändern versuche ich zu zeigen, dass die Identifikation solcher Sequenzen viel eher als das Zitieren von (Beleg-) Beispielen einen wesentlichen Test für die Angemessenheit von Schlüssen auf der Grundlage qualitativer Daten erlaubt.

Following Strong's (1979) model of the `ceremonial order' of the clinic, London oncology consultations drawn from the private sector and the National Health Service (NHS) are compared. Using both qualitative and quantitative measures, it is shown that private consultations offer more `personalized' consultations than are found in the NHS. Furthermore, private patients are more inclined to orchestrate their own care and to exhibit control of territory and agenda. The clinical and social gains and losses of these private consultations are examined and the issue of whether they provide a model for NHS care is assessed.
