The Xuan Son national park is one of the medicinal plants - diverse national parts in Vietnam. 665 species, which belong to 6 phylum, 139 families, 298 genera of vascular plant, has recorded in the field surveys. Among them, 22 species are listed in Red Data Book of Vietnam, 22 species in Red List of Medicinal plants of Vietnam and 3 species in Governmental Decree 32/2006/ND-CP. Among 139 families, the 10 most useful ones are Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, Rubiaceae, Moraceae, Verbenaceae, Menispermaceae, Myrsinaceae, Zingiberaceae and Araliaceae. Among 298 genera, the 12 most useful ones are Ficus, Ardisia, Polygonum, Alpinia, Limnophila, Stephania, Hedyotis, Mallotus, Desmodium, Piper, Solanum and Psychotria. The six popular types of medicinal plants in Xuan Son national park are tree (17.45%), shrub (22.26%), climber (25.86%), herb (31.88%), epiphytes (1.8%) and parasite (0.75%), distributing mainly to the primary forest, the secondary forest and moorland. This natural resource plays a vital part in community healthcare actions. It is used by local people to treat many diseases as: fever, marsh fever, cold, colic, diarrhea, cough, asthma… and to foster strength. The medicinal plant resource in Xuan Son national part has an important economical value and a potentiality to develop new pharmaceutical and other natural products, contributing to form the cultural identity of ethnic community in the area.

PurposeThe authors revisit the notion of co-production, highlight more critical and re-politicized forms of co-production and introduce three principles for its operationalization. The paper's viewpoint aims to find entry points for enabling more equitable disaster research and actions via co-production.Design/methodology/approachThe authors draw insights from the authors' reflections as climate and disaster researchers and literature on knowledge politics in the context of disaster and climate change, especially within critical disaster studies and feminist political ecology.FindingsDisaster studies can better contribute to disaster risk reduction via political co-production and situating local and Indigenous knowledge at the center through three principles, i.e. ensuring knowledge plurality, surfacing norms and assumptions in knowledge production and driving actions that tackle existing knowledge (and broader sociopolitical) structures.Originality/valueThe authors draw out three principles to enable the political function of co-production based on firsthand experiences of working with local and Indigenous peoples and insights from a diverse set of co-production, feminist political ecology and critical disaster studies literature. Future research can observe how it can utilize these principles in its respective contexts.

Based primarily on a systematic review of the relevant literature between 2000 and 2017, this paper reflects on the state of journalism about science in developing countries, with a focus on its issues, challenges and implications for their developmental processes and causes. Five major themes emerge from our analysis: (a) heavy dependence on foreign sources, especially the media of the Global North; (b) the low status of domestic science news in newsrooms; (c) uncritical science reporting that lends itself to easy influences of non-science vested interests; (d) tight grips of politics on science journalism; and (e) ineffective relationships between science and journalism. We will demonstrate that, while some of these problems exist in the North, they can have far more severe consequences on the progress of the South, where news plays an almost exclusive role in informing and engaging laypeople with science and its socio-cultural, economic and political implications.

The ECHO (Extension for Community Health Outcomes) model has been introduced and implemented in several hospitals and health programs in Vietnam since 2015. In 2018, Vietnam National Children's Hospital (VNCH) officially implemented the ECHO model to provide continuing medical education (CME) credits on pediatrics topics for medical staff in its satellite hospitals and health centers in the Northern region of Vietnam. This paper presents preliminary results of the ECHO program at VNCH. Methods included pre- and post-program assessments of pediatricians' clinical knowledge, self-efficacy, and professional satisfaction. The analysis compared the differences between pre/post scores descriptively. Knowledge of participants increased by 22.5% points on average. More than 90% of Project ECHO-Pediatrics participants experienced increased confidence. Overall, there was an improvement in participants' self-efficacy in the post-training compared to the pre-training (range 14.7%-22.6% difference from pre-training). All participants improved on their results in the clinical test immediately after the training and maintained it after 3 months. The study demonstrated the ability Project ECHO to improve healthcare worker knowledge and satisfaction.

AbstractGeopolitical risk, encompassing wars, terrorism, and tensions between states, exerts a significant impact on global affairs. Previous studies have examined the relationship between geopolitical risk and military spending. However, these studies were limited by certain shortcomings in the measurement tools used to assess geopolitical risk. The introduction of a new geopolitical risk index, leveraging textual analysis technology, offers a way to overcome some of these limitations. Despite this advancement, research exploring the predictive capacity of this geopolitical risk index on military spending behaviour remains scarce. Specifically, no previous studies have investigated the predictive power of both local and global geopolitical risk indices on military spending behaviour. To bridge this gap, this study employs panel VAR analysis for 34 countries worldwide, spanning from 1993 to 2022. The results indicate that the military spending behaviour of countries is significantly influenced by local geopolitical risk rather than global geopolitical risk. Furthermore, the findings also reveal that an increase in geopolitical risk during a given year can predict military spending behaviour in the subsequent 2 years. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers seeking to understand governments' behaviour regarding military spending.

This quantitative study investigated Vietnamese higher education students' engagement with synchronous online learning (SOL) during a heightened stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. Theoretically, we employed Engeström's (1987) Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) to guide our research theoretically and pedagogically, and to construct reliable methods of data collection instruments responsible for multiple quantifiable variables informed by previous literature and personal goals that best match students' study and work objectives. Over our 6-month research, we examined 475 Vietnamese college students. Our research showed that when engaged in SOL, the higher education research participants had a positive learning experience, perceived growth, and received learning assistance, in response to our quantitative examination of exploratory factor analysis and our qualitative counterpart of theme-based analysis. In light of this study, it is our hope that, according to the quantitative data, our delivery of initial insights into Vietnamese higher education institutions can provoke institutional leadership and management boards to think more closely about how to advance teaching and learning quality.
