Attempts to explain whites' paradoxical support for principles of racial equality & intransigence on social policies aimed at rectifying racial inequities. A multivariate model is used to explore the effects of racial prejudice, beliefs about racial discrimination, stratification beliefs, & self-interest on whites' attitudes toward racial policies, based on data from the 1990 General Social Survey & the 1986 American National Election Study. Class positions were not found to be important determinants of whites' attitudes regarding race-targeted social policy. However, recognition of continuing racial discrimination, structuralist attributions of the causes of racial inequality, & group self-interest all played a significant part in determining whites' views of race-targeted policies. It is concluded that educational programs aimed at demonstrating the legacy of past & present discrimination & the effects of structured inequality can improve the prospects for successful policy interventions. 3 Tables, 1 Appendix, 40 References. Replies to criticisms of Tuch & Hughes's "Whites' Racial Policy Attitudes" (all, 1996 [see abstracts of related articles]). Responding to concerns over the exclusion of party identification & ideology as a potential explanation of whites' racial policy views, it is argued that a reanalysis of these variables indicates they play no meaningful role in shaping whites' racial policy attitudes. The importance of group interests, relative to considerations of symbolic racism & trends of individualism, are also reviewed. Reasserting that their effort was intended to broaden the range of explanatory frameworks of racial policy preferences, it is nonetheless granted that future studies should pay greater attention to the scope of the interests involved & policy-specific variations in attitudes in order to better determine the causal processes behind racial policy views. 1 Table, 20 References. Race and Policing in America is about relations between police and citizens, with a focus on racial differences. It utilizes both the authors' own research and other studies to examine Americans' opinions, preferences, and personal experiences regarding the police. Guided by group-position theory and using both existing studies and the authors' own quantitative and qualitative data (from a nationally representative survey of whites, blacks, and Hispanics), this book examines the roles of personal experience, knowledge of others' experiences (vicarious experience), mass media reporting on the police, and neighborhood conditions (including crime and socioeconomic disadvantage) in structuring citizen views in four major areas: overall satisfaction with police in one's city and neighborhood, perceptions of several types of police misconduct, perceptions of police racial bias and discrimination, and evaluations of and support for a large number of reforms in policing

Uses a comprehensive model of job values & 1985-1990 data from national surveys to examine whether blacks & whites continue to value different job rewards &, if so, whether factors in addition to workers' social class account for these differences. It is found that, regardless of sociodemographic attributes, & independent of the influences of family background, objective class, & job incumbency, racial differences in job values persist. It is argued that past & present patterns of structural disadvantage & workplace discrimination continue to influence the job values of black workers. 3 Tables, 66 References. Data from the 1976-1995 Monitoring the Future surveys for black & white high school seniors across the US are used to examine trends in racial attitudes & interracial experiences. Analysis reveals some convergence between black & white responses, primarily the result of black youths reporting less positive attitudes toward interracial contact. Black youths report decreasing levels of interracial friendship, while white youths report increasing levels.
