Rural renovation in Germany:
The assessment and prospects of a successful program
Devoted since the 1960s to modernizing farming and adapting villages to highway traffic, the Federal Republic's rural renovation policy underwent a deep change during the 1980s, as emphasis was laid on a "global" approach to rural geography and on restoring buildings and preserving the natural environment. Since reunification in 1990, the policy of helping the east catch up with the west has exposed the limits of programs mainly based on exogenous interventions.
