This article sketches a neo-Bourdieusianframework for rethinking racial domination. It proposes that we need to historicize the notion of "race";todislodge the United States from its Archimedean position; to forsake the logic of the trial; andto disaggregateethnoracial phenomena into the "elementary forms" of racial domination, categorization, discrimination, segregation, seclusion, and violence. This approach makes it possible to grasp "race" as a denegated modality of ethnicity and to uncoverhow a system of ethnoracialclassificationis mapped onto a system of ethnoracialstratification, that is, to grasp "race" as a particular modality of "group-making."

Drawing on the Begriffsgeschichte of Reinhart Koselleck and the reflexive sociology of Pierre Bourdieu, my book The Invention of the 'Underclass' draws a microhistory of the birth, diffusion, and demise of this racialized folk devil at the intersection of the academic field, the journalistic field, and the politics-policy-philanthropic field. This history illuminates the politics of knowledge about dispossessed and dishonored categories in the metropolis and suggests three notions that can help researchers parse the use and abuse of other social science constructs and thus practice better conceptual hygiene: lemming effects (illustrated by the wild rush to deploy 'diaspora'), conceptual speculative bubble (as with 'racial capitalism'), and turnkey problematics (such as the 'resilient city' and the 'creative city'). I discuss the factors that foster the development of epistemic bandwagons, speculation, and turnkeys, and specify the criteria that make for a robust concept in terms of semantics (clarity and neutrality), logics (coherence and type-specificity), and heuristics (empirical adequacy and theoretical productivity).

Bu
makale, [International Journal of Urban and Regional Research'ün önümüzdeki iki

AbstractThis article frames the themes of the two‐part Interventions section 'Bourdieu Comes to Town'. I first establish the pertinence of Bourdieu's sociology for students of the city by revisiting his youthful work on power, space, and the diffusion of urban forms in provincial Béarn and colonial Algeria. In both cases, urbanization is the key vector of transformation, and the city, town, or camp the site anchoring the forces dissolving the social fabric of the French countryside and overturning French imperialism in North Africa. These early studies establish that all social and mental structures have spatial correlates and conditions of possibility; that social distance and power relations are both expressed in and reinforced by spatial distance; and that propinquity to the center of accumulation of capital (economic, military, or cultural) is a key determinant of the force and velocity of social change. Next, I discuss four principles that undergird Bourdieu's investigations and can profitably drive urban inquiry: the Bachelardian moment of epistemological rupture, the Weberian invitation to historicize the agent (habitus), the world (social space) and the categories of the analyst (epistemic reflexivity); the Leibnizian‐Durkheimian imperative to deploy the topological mode of reasoning; and Cassirer's command to heed the constitutive efficacy of symbolic structures. The plasticity and productivity of his concepts suggest that Bourdieu can not only energize urban inquiry but also merge it into a broader analytic of the trialectic of symbolic division, social space, and the built environment. This paves a pathway for reconceptualizing the urban as the domain of accumulation, differentiation and contestation of manifold forms of capital, which makes the city a central ground, product, and prize of historical struggles.

Class, ethnicity, and state in the making of marginality: Revisiting territories of urban relegationIn the postindustrial city, relegation takes the form of real or imaginary consignment to distinctive sociospatial formations variously and vaguely referred to as "inner cities," "ghettos," "enclaves," "no-go areas," "problem districts," or simply "rough neighborhoods." How are we characterize and differentiate these spaces, what determines their trajectory (birth, growth, decay and death), whence comes the intense stigma attached to them, and what constellations of class, ethnicity and state do they both materialize and signify? These are the questions I pursued in my book "Urban outcasts" (2008) through a methodical comparison of the trajectories of the black American ghetto and the European working-class peripheries in the era of neoliberal ascendancy. In this article, I revisit this cross-continental sociology of "advanced marginality" to tease out its broader lessons for our understanding of the tangled nexus of symbolic, social and physical space in the polarizing metropolis at century's threshold in particular, and for bringing the core principles of Bourdieu's sociology to bear on comparative urban studies in general. Kwestie te podejmuję w książce "Urban outcasts" [Miejscy wyrzutkowie] (2008), w której metodycznie porównuję trajektorie amerykańskiego czarnego getta i europejskich peryferii robotniczych w czasach panowania neoliberalizmu.
