SummaryThis international comparison firstly examines labour market organization, casual labour and work mentality in North American seaports and in Hamburg. By contrast to British ports, these ports finally dispensed with casual labour between the world economic crisis and the Second World War, and labour markets there were centralized. Secondly, the industrial militancy of mobile dockworkers without permanent jobs is examined through a consideration of syndicalist organizations (1919–1921), and interpreted as an interplay of experiences with power in the network of labour market, workplace and docklands. The study refers repeatedly to the decisive dividing line between regularly and irregularly employed dockworkers. National differences in trade union representation and dispute behaviour are analysed by reference to dockworkers' direct actions.

In dem Beitrag wird das Problem der Arbeitssicherheit im Hamburger Hafen in der Zeit zwischen dem großen Streik 1896/97 und den Anfangsjahren der nationalsozialistischen Herrschaft analysiert. Nach einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit der Aussagekraft von Unfallstatistiken wird die Unfallentwicklung bei der Arbeit im Hamburger Hafen betrachtet. Zwei Trends fallen auf: 1923 lag die Quote der schweren und tödlichen Unfälle unerwartet hoch; seit 1925 ist ein steiler Anstieg ablesbar. Es wird nach den Ursachen der hohen Unfallrate gefragt. Als wesentliche Faktoren werden der hohe Anteil von Gelegenheitsarbeitern sowie die nahezu unbegrenzte Arbeitszeit als besondere Gefahrenquellen ermittelt. Angesichts der starken Unfallgefährdung der Hafenarbeiter wird gefragt, welche Maßnahmen zur Verminderung des Unfallrisikos ergriffen wurden. Der Blick auf die Auseinandersetzungen über die Unfallverhütung im Hafenumschlag zeigt die Machtkonstellationen, die den Alltag der Hafenarbeiter nachhaltig prägten. Es wird festgestellt, daß am meisten unfallgefährdet die Gelegenheitsarbeiter waren, die sich der Macht ihrer Vorarbeiter zwar nicht einfach fügten, aber ihnen doch so ausgeliefert waren, daß den Bemühungen um eine wirksame Unfallverhütung enge Grenzen gesetzt waren. This edited collection offers a timely and original perspective on the many upheavals and revolutions that broke out across the world during the earlytwentieth century. With previous research tending to confine revolutions within national borders, this book sets out to place them within a broader global sphere of thought and action. The authors explore the time phase between the Russian Revolution of 1905 and the Asturian Revolution of 1934, including cases from South Africa, Australia, China, the Middle East and Latin America. Providing insights from leading scholars in the field, this collection highlights the interconnectedness and transnationalism of upheavals and revolutions, offering a new approach which integrates political, social and cultural history. Terrorismus, so die Grundthese dieses Bandes, ist ein kommunikativer Akt. Die Gewalt ist kein Selbstzweck, sondern soll Botschaften transportieren und maximale Aufmerksamkeit erzielen. Die Beiträge des Bandes untersuchen die kommunikative Verflechtung terroristischer Gewalt mit staatlichem Handeln und der Mediengesellschaft. Analysiert werden Attentate im Russland und Frankreich des 19. ebenso wie der irische und baskische Terrorismus des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts oder die Roten Brigaden und die RAF. Dabei wird deutlich, dass gerade die Kommunikation zwischen Terroristen, Staat und Öffentlichkeit auch Chancen zur Deeskalation bietet.
