Online social networking has become a huge global phenomenon in only a few years, with hundreds of millions now regularly using social networks to coordinate their personal lives, or to network and collaborate professionally in ways never before possible. These new technologies are still starting to be exploited by trades unions and their activists in the U.K., but they are already showing signs that they could offer significant gains to the movement.
The fortification of Malta by the Knights of St John used the latest design in defence technology on an ever expanding programme. Fort Manoel on the Isoletto dominating Marsamxett was part of a circle of works protecting the principle harbours. The fort and its chapel were designed by de Manodion. Work began in 1723 when Anton Manoel de Vilhena was Grand Master. Later, in the British period, the building was occupied by military personnel. During war time considerable damage was inflicted. Recent restoration work on the fabric of the fort has revealed various artefacts including a number of tobacco pipes. The six European pipes and two Turkish style chibouk or reed pipes are described here. ; N/A

Geographically and politically Malta had a pivotal position in the Mediterranean. The Order of St. John of Jerusalem acquired the islands in 1530. In 1798 Napoleon occupied the island with the connivance of the local population, Following his defeat, Malta effectively became a UK protectorate until independence in 1974. On Malta there was never a clay pipe factory as such, although residents were both users and traders in tobacco. Ottoman-style socketed pipes - chibouks or reed pipes (Maltese pip tal-qasba) - from Greece or the Balkans dominate the assemblages from the seventeenth century onwards; western European products figure increasingly at later dates. ; peer-reviewed

AbstractSome mediation scholars argue that mediator effectiveness is a direct function of matching the mediator to a specific mediation case, in terms of aligning the neutral's skill and experience to the dynamics of the case in question. This study uses Q methodology and reveals four styles of mediators: the counselor, the negotiator, the facilitator, and the democrat.
