The underlying theme of the book is that a qualitative change has taken place in the politics of crime control in the UK since the early 1990s. En el presente artículo, los autores abordan algunas de las características principales de la criminología cultural, una perspectiva que ha tenido un notable desarrollo en los últimos años. En particular, definen la necesidad un nuevo enfoque «cultural» en la criminología contemporánea, en el marco de la Modernidad Tardía, que nos obliga a replantearnos tanto su objeto como su método de investigación. Esta propuesta, que se define como novedosa, busca trazar su genealogía en enfoques como el «naturalismo» de Matza, la fenomenología radical de Becker o la perspectiva crítica de la National Deviancy Conference, entre otros. De esta forma, los autores plantean la necesidad de disputar el campo criminológico con aquellas «criminologías» quedenominan «positivistas», «neoliberales» o «académicas». Por último, esbozan algunos ejemplos de este «nuevo/viejo» enfoque para la criminología.
