The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been spreading rapidly in China and the Chinese government took a series of policies to control the epidemic. Studies found that severe COVID-19 is characterized by pneumonia, lymphopenia, exhausted lymphocytes and a cytokine storm. Studies have showen that SARS-CoV2 has significant genomic similarity to the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV), which was a pandemic in 2002. More importantly, some diligent measures were used to limit its spread according to the evidence of hospital spread. Therefore, the Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) has been established by the World Health Organization (WHO) with strategic objectives for public health to curtail its impact on global health and economy. The purpose of this paper is to review the transmission patterns of the three pneumonia: SARS-CoV2, SARS-CoV, and MERS-CoV. We compare the new characteristics of COVID-19 with those of SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of PERIOD3 (PER3) genotypes on circadian rhythmicity in flight cadets after militarized management. Methods: We performed a preliminary study in 146 newly enrolled male flight cadets. Venous blood samples were collected, and genotyping of PER3 (4/5) was determined by using PCR. The morningness-eveningness questionnaire (MEQ) survey was given to flight cadets upon enrollment and after militarized management for 24 months respectively. Comparison of frequency distribution of PER3 genotypes between cases and controls (120 well-matched civilians) was performed using the X2 test. We also compared the circadian rhythmicity upon enrollment and 24 months after enrollment in flight cadets, and analyzed the connection of changes in circadian clock with PER3 genotypes. Results: The frequency distribution of PER3 genotypes in flight cadets was not significantly different from that in controls subjects. MEQ survey results showed chronotype within flight cadet group varied widely at the two time-points: the moderately morning type (50%) and the neither type (41.1%) upon enrollment; the neither type (76.7%) and the moderately morning type (21.2%) 24 months after enrollment. The circadian rhythm of individuals with the PER3 (5/5) genotype showed no significant difference before and after 24 months of militarized management, whereas notable changes were found in individuals with the PER3 (4/4) genotype (n=116, X2=37.26, P < 0.001). Conclusion: In conclusion, we provide some evidence that circadian rhythm of flight cadets with the PER3 (5) allele are less likely to be affected compared to those with the PER3 (4) allele.

Abstract: Aims: The problematic use of social networks is discussed as a further specific type of Internet-use disorders. Our project aims to clarify whether social-networks-use disorder (SNUD) is marked by characteristics of addictive behaviors by tracking behavior and investigating the relevance of 1) implicit cognitions, 2) the experiences of gratification and compensation and 3) use expectancies in SNUD compared to tobacco-use disorder. Methodology: Four groups will be examined: individuals with 1) SNUD without tobacco use, 2) risky use patterns with regard to social networks without tobacco use, 3) tobacco use disorder and 4) healthy controls. All participants first complete a laboratory examination including the Implicit Association Test (IAT) and the Approach-Avoidance task (AAT). We will use smartphone-based data tracking for 14 days following laboratory testing to record smoking and social-networks-use patterns. During this period, we further measure use expectancies and the experience of gratification and compensation by means of a smartphone-based experience sampling method (ESM). Conclusions: This is the first study to examine relevant characteristics of addictive behaviors in individuals with SNUD compared to individuals with tobacco use, using a combination of experimental psychological methods and smartphone-based measurements. We expect that this investigative approach will contribute to a deeper understanding of the processes involved in SNUD.
Abstract Background Basal ganglia hemorrhage (BGH) is a devastating neurologic disease with high morbidity and mortality, and its management is still controversial. We evaluated the effectiveness of surgical treatments for BGH and investigated computed tomography (CT) imaging features affecting the hematoma evacuation rate (ER) in patients treated with neuroendoscopic surgery. Materials and Methods A total of 104 BGH patients who underwent craniotomy, burr-hole drainage, or neuroendoscopic surgery were analyzed retrospectively. Clinical characteristics, imaging features, and postoperative complications were compared. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were applied to identify imaging factors associated with ER. Results A significant difference in ER was observed: 78.4% in patients treated with neuroendoscopic surgery, 33.6% in patients treated with burr-hole drainage, and 82.5% in patients treated with craniotomy (p < 0.001). Similar results were observed for operative time (p < 0.001). Five cases (12.5%) of rebleeding were found in patients treated with burr-hole drainage (p = 0.020). No significant difference was found for pneumonia, intracranial infection, gastrointestinal bleeding, hospital mortality, hospital stay, expenses, 3-day Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores after surgery, or GCS at discharge. The CT imaging feature, the island sign (p = 0.004), was observed as an independent factor correlated with lower ER for neuroendoscopic surgery. Conclusions The benefits and drawbacks of surgical treatments confirmed they have their own indications, and neuroendoscopic surgery may be relatively beneficial for BGH treatment. The island sign was an independent factor affecting ER for neuroendoscopic surgery. Therefore, comprehensive assessment of clinical data, especially the island sign, should be performed preoperatively in BGH patients.
