ABSTRACTThe current study was designed to assess the relationship between dentists' communication behavior and their perception of patient attributes such as likeability, manageability, and prognosis. Six AEGD residents were videotaped, and their verbal and nonverbal communication behavior was analyzed in the manner described. Each resident was administered a 20‐item questionnaire to determine his/her perception of patient attributes. For overall dentist nonverbal behavior, perception of the patient and the amount of recognized interruptions that the dentist allowed were significantly correlated (r = 0.28, p < 0.05). When the three dentist perception subcategories‐Likeability, Manageability, and Prognosis‐were analyzed, verbal and nonverbal communication leads were significantly correlated with the dentists' perceptions of patient attributes in each. The hypothesis of a relationship between patient communication behavior and the dentists' perceptions of patient attributes was supported. The results suggest that dentists alter their communication behavior depending on their assessment of various patient qualities. Whether training in interviewing techniques and communication behavior would have an effect on this process is unknown and should be addressed.

This study tests an uncertainty model of organizational assimilation assimilation that views assimilation as an active process involving both organizational attempts to form the newcomer (socialization) and the newcomer's efforts to influence the organization (individualization). Results showed that during organizational entry, socialization tactics as well as communication traits, attitudes, and values influence information / feedback-seeking behaviors, which then result in higher attributional confidence and lower role ambiguity. Organizational commitment, communication satisfaction, and role orientation likewise are influenced by organizational and individual antecedents, which then affect information-seeking behavior. Newcomers who actively sought information and became critically involved during early employment were more likely to assume an innovative role profile within the organization.

Not a single organization is immune to crisis. Negligent handling of regulations and standards, misprotection of personal information, mistakes in care and treatment, financial resources frauds, non-compliance with operational and technical processes, or hygiene scandals are just some of the issues that can turn into a crisis. This article provides tips and ideas for developing practical communication activities in times of crisis, including answers to the question of what a medical institution can do to be better prepared when a crisis occurs and how to reduce physical, psychological, and emotional stress on the staff and patients.

Community integration for newcomers was more strongly related to general information seeking than to specific use of newspapers. Four hundred newcomers in Seattle were polled by phone. When newcomers arrive in a community, they need to fill many information gaps, and this study found that newspapers (which made no special effort to reach newcomers in the city studied) did not fill them especially well. People who were reluctant to leave their old community were most interested in becoming integrated into the new one, in terms of gaining information.
