Das im Rahmen des ZUMA-Methodenforschungsprojektes 'Egozentrierte Netzwerke in Massenumfragen' zur Validitätsprüfung der Netzwerkgeneratoren eingesetzte Kreuzdesign stellte komplexe Anforderungen an das Datenmanagement. So sollte es vor allem möglich sein, Datensätze in beliebiger Auswahl zu verknüpfen und aus vorhandenen Datensätzen in beliebiger Auswahl neue Variablentypen zu generieren. Darüber hinaus zählten zu den Anforderungen die Verarbeitung variabler Dateiformate und unterschiedlicher Variablentypen, eine offene Variablenzahl und ein Interface zu Statistikprogrammpaketen. Die Anforderungen des Forschungsprojekts wurden über die Zerlegung der Gesamtinformationen in die Identifikationsvariable des Befragten verbundene Teildateien gelöst. Die technische Umsetzung erfolgte über das 'Scientific Information Retrieval Database Management System' (SIR-DBMS). (WZ)

A common feature in the assessment of on-going programs is the use of intuition and common sense in selecting and analyzing evidence. Although intuition nay provide rich insights into a specific situation, there is no way to ascertain whether the intuition represents good judgment or good politics. This article describes one means of selecting and analyzing evidence for assessing changing situations, and offers a procedure that light improve research on action-related problems.

Data are no longer simply a component of administrative and managerial work but a pervasive resource and medium through which organizations come to know and act upon the contingencies they confront. We theorize how the ongoing technological developments reinforce the traditional functions of data as instruments of management and control but also reframe and extend their role. By rendering data as technical entities, digital technologies transform the process of knowing and the knowledge functions data fulfil in socioeconomic life. These functions are most of the times mediated by putting together disperse and steadily updatable data in more stable entities we refer to as data objects. Users, customers, products, and physical machines rendered as data objects become the technical and cognitive means through which organizational knowledge, patterns, and practices develop. Such conditions loosen the dependence of data from domain knowledge, reorder the relative significance of internal versus external references in organizations, and contribute to a paradigmatic contemporary development that we identify with the decentering of organizations of which digital platforms are an important specimen.

This article distinguishes the following three types of religious organizations: congregations, denominational organizations (religious organizations that are not congregations but that mainly produce religion), and religious nonprofits (religious organizations that work mainly in functional fields other than religion). For each type of religious organization, I discuss the key questions we might ask, the current data resources relevant for answering these key questions, and the appropriate action for advancing empirical research. I also describe the political economy of data production on religious organizations.

This article presents and examines the data sources that are currently available for conducting research on nonprofit arts organizations in the United States. It gives a detailed look at how the field has developed and why particular data problems exist. It examines the data necessary to understand sufficiently the largely uncharted territory of nonprofit arts organizations and it gives an overview of the key data sources that do exist. It summarizes recent efforts of scholars and researchers to assemble better databases on arts organizations and, finally, it makes recommendations for further research to be pursued.
