Analyzing twelve semi-structured interviews with physically disabled women and the data collected at the summer camp of the Lithuanian Paraplegia Association in Monciškės and at the show "Miss Disability 2005, the article focuses on the peculiarities of the disabled women's femininity. The article also uses several texts from the Lithuanian nerve-muscle sickness journal "Nendrelė" and life stories of young disabled women published in the youth magazine "Panelė." The interview material enables us to conclude that most physically disabled women perceive femininity traditionally. In their view, a capability to carry out "feminine" household duties, physical beauty and a "soft" character are the main features of a woman. Internalizing normative body ideals, most disabled young women attempt to disguise their disability. The informants encounter the society's negative attitude towards them, particularly with regard to their sexuality and motherhood. However, the data of our research reveals that the real life of physically disabled contradicts the established public attitude towards them. Most of them consider sexuality and partnership as a normal part of their lives.
Esta investigación tuvo por objetivo analizar las mediciones de masculinidad, feminidad, machismo y sumisión, características asociadas a la personalidad, de un grupo de docentes de Educación Física. Participaron en el estudio 53 docentes de nivel básico que laboran en un programa implementado por una institución gubernamental en la Ciudad de México. El muestreo fue de tipo no probabilístico. Se empleó como instrumento el Inventario de Masculinidad y Feminidad (IMAFE), instrumento confiable y válido en México, sujeto a prueba en otros países, en él se incluyen aspectos de los papeles de género tradicionales: machismo y sumisión. El análisis de los datos se efectúo mediante la prueba "t-Student" y el análisis de varianza de una clasificación, así como la comparación de medias de los resultados arrojados. Se concluye que no hay diferencias estadísticamente significativas en las cuatro escalas propuestas por el IMAFE y las variables de trabajo, sexo, edad y estado civil, en el grupo de docentes de Educación Física, en lo que respecta a las características asociadas a la personalidad ; This research aimed to analyze the measurements of masculinity, femininity, machismo and submission features associated with the personality characteristics of a group of physical education teachers. Participated in the study53 basic level teachers working in a program implemented by a government institution in Mexico City. The sampling was not probabilistic type. As a tool for data collection was used the Inventory of Masculinity and femininity (IMAFE), reliable and valid instrument in Mexico, subject to testing in other countries, there aspects of traditional gender roles: machismo and submission. Data analysis undertaken using the "t-student" test and analysis of variance classification and comparison of the results obtained. It is concluded that no statistically significant differences in the four scales proposed by IMAFE and work variables sex, age and marital status in the group of physical education teachers in regard to the characteristics associated with personality

Der vorliegende Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der Frage des Geschlechts der Macht im Kolonialismus anhand der thematischen Konstellation von "Weiblichkeit, Männlichkeit und Asymmetrie" in Alfred Döblins Amazonastrilogie. Anders als frühere Beiträge über die Trilogie, die sich mit den Themen "Kolonialismus", "Interkulturalität", "koloniale Gewalt Struktur" und mit anderen sich auf ästhetische und publizistische Schriften des Autors ergebenden thematischen Schwerpunkten befassen, wird die Dialektik von Macht und Gender im Selbstermächtigungsprozess der Amazonen zunächst als destruktiv für innerindianische Geschlechtsverhältnisse und dann kontraproduktiv für die von eigenen Ehemännern angenommene antikoloniale Strategie betrachtet. Eigene Ehemänner geraten ins Kreuzfeuer der Kritik und Gewalt, wobei antikoloniale Front sozusagen dadurch unterminiert wird. Nachgewiesen wird im Beitrag, wie Amazonen, ihren politischen Zynismus betreibend, eher zu Alliierten der Kolonisatoren werden und unbewusst zur Verankerung des Kolonialismus beitragen. Des Weiteren wird untersucht, wie die selbstreflexionsfähigen und vernunftbegabten Amazonen aus früheren politischen Fehlentscheidungen lernen, ihre gegen eigene Ehemänner gerichteten politischen Gesten und Überzeugungen nun von Grund auf umzudenken, um in eigener Kulturordnung Eintracht zu stiften, wodurch eine zukunftsorientierte gemeinsame antikoloniale Front ermöglicht werden könnte. ; The present paper deals with the question of sex of politics through the thematic constellation of "femininity, masculinity and asymmetry" in Alfred Döblin Amazonas trilogy. In contrast to previous contributions, it deals with the themes of "colonialism", "interculturalism", "colonial violence" "structure", and other thematic focuses deriving from the aesthetic and journalistic writings of the author, in the article, it is shown that the dialectic of power and gender becomes the self-empowerment process of the Amazons first as a destructive for inner-Indian gender relations and therefore counter-productive for the anticolonial strategy assumed by their own husbands. Their own husbands are caught up in the crossfire of criticism and violence, whereby the anticolonial front is so to speak undermined. In the article, it is shown how Amazons, while practicing their political cynicism become the allies of the colonizers and unconsciously contribute to the anchoring of colonialism. It also examines how the selfreflective and rational Amazons learn from previous political mistakes to rethink their political gestures and convictions which are clearly directed against their own husbands and surely to create harmony in their own cultural order, thereby this could enable a common future-oriented anticolonial front.
Maikrux and Falete are two TV figures which form part of Basque and Spanish popular culture. Both of them perform non-hegemonic gender identities, embodying strong femininities despite the fact they were assigned as male at birth. Our analysis deals with humour and the vernacular, in which we highlight that instead of deactivating their possible political potentiality, their role in the cultural imagination allows «possibility» and agency. This is possible not only because of what Maikrux and Falete «are» but rather because the audience can reappropriate certain pleasures that they embody, empowering the audiences with complex and plural identifications. ; Maikruz y Falete son dos personajes televisivos que forman parte de la cultura popular vasca y española y que performan identidades de género no hegemónicas, pues encarnan feminidades fuertes a pesar de haber sido asignados como varones en el nacimiento. This article problematizes the historical conditions of emergence of the «discourse of moral superiority of women», rhetoric of legitimate femininity in Chile under which there would be a set of «properly feminine» qualities that are here to humanize, renovate and clean the public space and politics. I will argue that the main sociohistorical configurations in which this discourse emerges, correspond to the proliferation of public debates around gender, race and the nation in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. In the first section of the article I will present the nationalist configuration in which sex-racialized imagery of «national family» would emerge. In the second section, I will discuss some of the discursive practices of othering who answer the call of the civilizing mission, including the racialized figure of «the popular mother» that takes the central place to understand the emergence of the discourse of «the moral superiority of the woman» in Chile at the time. Finally, I will suggest some conclusions proposing a look of bewilderment and denaturation in relation to «the unmarked normal» of the category «woman» in Chile. ; El presente texto problematiza las condiciones históricas de emergencia del «discurso de la superioridad moral de la mujer», una retórica de la femineidad legítima en Chile según la cual existiría un conjunto de cualidades «propiamente femeninas» que vendrían a humanizar, renovar y limpiar el espacio público y la política. Sostendré que las principales configuraciones sociohistóricas en las que emerge este discurso, se corresponden con la proliferación de debates públicos en torno al género, la raza y la nación, a fines del siglo xix y comienzos del siglo xx. En la primera sección del artículo, presentaré la configuración nacionalista en la cual emergería el imaginario sexo-racializado de «la familia nacional». En el segundo apartado, expondré algunas de las prácticas discursivas de alterización que responden al llamado de la misión civilizadora, entre las cuales la figura racializada de «la madre popular» ocupa un lugar central para comprender la emergencia del discurso de «la superioridad moral de la mujer» en el Chile de la época. Finalmente, sugeriré algunas conclusiones que proponen una mirada de extrañamiento y desnaturalización en relación a «la normalidad no marcada» de la categoría «mujer» en Chile.
Esta publicación cuenta con la financiación del Ministerio de Universidades a través del programa de Formación del Profesorado Universitario FPU19/01865. ; Este trabajo tiene por objetivo llevar a cabo un análisis iconográfico de las emisiones numismáticas de virtudes que se producen tras la muerte y divinización de las mujeres de la dinastía antonina (96-192 d.C) durante el Alto Imperio romano. Se pretende analizar la significación de las virtudes emitidas en relación a estas mujeres tras su divinización. Estas virtudes son consideradas indicativos del papel de género otorgado a las figuras femeninas vinculadas al poder imperial, al mismo tiempo que actúan como exempla para el resto de mujeres romanas de clase alta. También este análisis pretende conocer tanto la trayectoria vital de estas emperatrices como la imagen pública y discursiva proyectada de ellas tras su muerte. Para ello se ha realizado una comparativa entre las virtudes emitidas tras la defunción y consagración de las emperatrices antoninas, así como de aquellas virtudes emitidas en vida de las mismas. Para la elaboración de este trabajo se ha incorporado el género como categoría de análisis indispensable para afrontar cualquier estudio de estas características. Este texto trata de ser una contribución tanto para la Historia de las Mujeres como para la propia historia del Imperio romano. ; The main object of this work is to study the coins' iconography of virtues from the antonine dynasty (96 d.C - 192 d.C) during the Early Roman Empire. This work is focused on the meaning of these virtues emitted after the death and deification of empresses. These virtues can be employed to acknowledge the role played by these women in Roman politics. Besides, studying virtues is a good way to analyse the biography of these Roman empresses and therefore, their public image. This study pretends to contribute to provide information about Women and Roman History. In order to achieve these goals, it is necessary to make a comparison between which virtues are emitted during their lives and which ones after their deaths. The branding of Singapore International Airlines with the image of a beautiful, petite and servile 'Oriental' woman dressed in figure-huggingsarong-kebaya is one of the world's longest running and most successful advertising campaigns. But this image does not simply advertise a service; it is part of a global and national regime of symbolic constructions of gender that today is seen as outdated and sexist, and bearing little relation to modern Singapore where women have good access to education and increased life choices resulting from engagement in the wage economy. The nation's economic success has been a force for their liberation. One catastrophic consequence of women's changed lives has been the plunge in fertility rates. Singapore has one of the world's lowest despite energetic government campaigns encouraging women to have more babies – and men to be more 'masculine'. The failure of these campaigns and rethinking of the Singapore Girl highlight a key premise of this book: there are limits to the power of discursive constructions of gender in the national interest.
