Role congruence among Ur legislators in city council & Sch district settings was studied by analyzing the congruence between the representatives' view of the representational role & their reported behavior. On the basis of role theory it is hyp'ed that legislators will vary from each other in their extent of role congruence & that these variations are related to their role type. Extensive lack of congruence between role image & perceived behavior will lead to role strain. Role strain is defined as "the felt difficulty in fulfilling role obligations." Data were collected by interviews with 79 of a total of 83 legislators serving in 12 elected non-partisan bodies in 6 Ur, but not subUr, communities in the Greater Detroit Metropolitan Area. A considerable degree of role congruence was found among R's, contradicting the assumption that role occupants will strain to behave congruently with their role self-image. Representatives often made decisions in a manner incongruent with their self-image. Politicos & delegates were found to experience more role strain than trustees. In summary, the representational role is characterized by variability of role norms but relative uniformity of role behavior. Incongruence in turn is accompanied by dissatisfaction. Much of the incongruence between norms & behavior seems to be related to the unwillingness of the constituents to "cooperate" with the rep representative, ie, to "play their roles properly." Role theory presumes a soc system in which diff "players" engage in diff but reciprocal behaviors. 5 Tables. M. Maxfield.

This article demonstrates the benefits of using a role theory approach in the field of International Political Economy (IPE) by demonstrating the benefits of role theory relative to variants of the social constructivist paradigm, especially vis-à-vis identity based accounts of IPE. This article also documents why and how role theory has always had a home in IPE even before the constructivist revolution in the 1990s. The social interactionist dimension in the work of Herbert Mead and his notion of a general other are linked to the relational ideas of friendship and impartial spectator present in the works of the founding father of classical political economy, Adam Smith. These similar ideas about the self and their surrounding social environment is a useful starting point to locate role theory in IPE and demonstrate its analytical advantages within social constructivism. After showing the "forgotten" place role theory has always had in IPE, the article illustrates the potential of using a role theory approach within the field of IPE through an illustrative analysis of the Greek economic crisis.

This article assesses the relationship between Brazil and Chile, focusing on the fields of economic and security cooperation from Chile's perspective. Chile plays a number of different roles, the most salient of which is 'global trader'. This role stretches beyond Brazil's expectations, but it converges with the social demands of Mexico and the United States as well as with the cues of the global market. Such a salient role – alongside that of mediator, bridge builder, and partner of Argentina in security cooperation issues – influences Chile's patterns of cooperation with and distance from Brazil as the regional power in South America.

Based on role theory, the present study examines theoretically meaningful, yet infrequently studied relationship between organization identification, autonomy orientation and competence mobilization in predicting role breadth and role performance. Data collected from employees ( n = 178) and supervisors ( n = 67) working in a large information technology (IT) company based in India was analyzed using hierarchical regression to test the hypotheses. Results show that organization identification, autonomy orientation and competence mobilization were positively related to role breadth. Specifically, role breadth mediates the relationship between organization identification, autonomy orientation and competence mobilization and role performance. Discussion shows insights into theoretical and practical perspectives.
