On March 15, 1937, the United States Civil Service Commission, in a forward-looking attempt to keep pace with the increasing demand for trained social scientists in the federal service, announced an examination for "social science analysts"—six grades in all—as follows
This book, the first in the new series Traditions in Social Theory, is a comprehensive introduction to philosophical problems in the social sciences, encompassing traditional and contemporary perspectives. It is readily accessible, with a firm emphasis on communicating difficult philosophical ideas clearly and effectively to those from outside this discipline. Ted Benton and Ian Craib move systematically through major topic areas, from positivism to post-structuralism, using a wide variety of examples and cases to illustrate key themes
Edited by two experts in the area, Geoethics: Ethical Challenges and Case Studies in Earth Sciences addresses a range of topics surrounding the concept of ethics in geoscience, making it an important reference for any Earth scientist with a growing concern for sustainable development and social responsibility.

Scientific knowledge is conventionally distinguished from the everyday knowledge of lay people that is transmitted in stories-narrative knowledge. Recently, however, a call for redeeming narrative knowledge in the humanities and social sciences in general and in organization studies in particular can be heard. The present article considers whether there is enough ground for reintroducing the narrative knowledge into a research tradition, which until now has been imbued with the logoscientific knowledge.Several existing and emerging traditions within organization studies are intent on achieving such a rapprochement: for instance case studies, studies of organizational stories and a variety of interpretive approaches. A collective reflection is needed to consolidate such attempts. Such reflection, which this paper initiates, might aim at interpretation which lies beyond the hermeneutic tradition of separating the material world from the symbolic, and at a conscious development of a genre which will speak to practitioners as well as to theoreticians.

The integration of social science with computer science and engineering fields has produced a new area of study: computational social science. This field applies computational methods to novel sources of digital data such as social media, administrative records, and historical archives to develop theories of human behavior. We review the evolution of this field within sociology via bibliometric analysis and in-depth analysis of the following subfields where this new work is appearing most rapidly: (a) social network analysis and group formation; (b) collective behavior and political sociology; (c) the sociology of knowledge; (d) cultural sociology, social psychology, and emotions; (e) the production of culture; (f) economic sociology and organizations; and (g) demography and population studies. Our review reveals that sociologists are not only at the center of cutting-edge research that addresses longstanding questions about human behavior but also developing new lines of inquiry about digital spaces as well. We conclude by discussing challenging new obstacles in the field, calling for increased attention to sociological theory, and identifying new areas where computational social science might be further integrated into mainstream sociology.
