Present-day Brunei has been able to survive as a micro-state thanks to oil. But its wealth has also proved consolidating with regard to political structure, including ethnic stratification. Chinese and Ibans have been accorded grossly inferior status, by comparison with their counterparts in Malaysia, owing partly to the distinctive evolution of nationalism and monarchy in the two countries. Even the seven recognised indigenous groups are differentiated on the basis of religion. But more significant is the threat to the very survival of non-Muslim cultures from assimilationist pressures in an authoritarian Malay polity.

Haemophilus influenzae serotype b (Hib) was a major cause of meningitis in children until Hib conjugate vaccine was introduced into the routine infant immunization program and Hib disease in children was almost eliminated. In Alaska, northern Canada and other countries with Indigenous peoples, H. influenzae serotype a (Hia) has emerged as a significant cause of pneumonia, meningitis and septic arthritis especially in children under 24 months of age. A joint government initiative between the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) was carried out to assess whether an Hia vaccine could be developed for the common good.

At the first glance Polish intolerance of Muslims—expressed in a variety of quantitative and qualitative studies—seems to be puzzling for two reasons. Firstly, Poland has a six century long tradition of peaceful coexistence with Tatars, indigenous Polish Muslims, thus Poles should be used to the Muslim Other. Secondly, the number of Muslims in Poland is marginal (approximately 0.1%), which makes them hardly visible in the public sphere. Based on four hypotheses constructed on two factors (the number of Muslims and the wider regional and European context) the article hopes to provide some preliminary explanations.

This article focuses on the development of professional social work in Sámi areas in Norway after World War II, which coincides with the development of the welfare state. Labour immigration in the 1970s made Norway visible as a multicultural society and welfare professions adopted culturally sensitive methodology, which was also reflected in Sámi social work. Today's criticism of multiculturalism requires new answers. The integration of the Sámi into the welfare system is an argument for why a decolonizing Sámi approach should build on the aim of post-colonialism in recognizing historical injustice and the emphasis in critical indigenous philosophy on dialogue.

In jurisdictional contests involving expressions of speech and assertions of indigenous sovereignty, the license plate richly characterizes the constitutive approach to law as it transpires on roadways across the United States and particularly in Hawai'i.1

This historical essay critically examines the early military settlement projects realized by the French Engineering Corps in Senegal and the Western Sudan during the second half of the 19th century. The French were preoccupied with the establishment of official control over the hinterland, confronting a variety of challenges in situ. In striving to go beyond the prestigious image of the Corps and the discourse on colonial settlement forms as an instrument for domination, this article exposes aspects of uncertainty and haphazardness behind the projects. Visual correspondence with indigenous cultures is expanded, employing a rich variety of historical sources.

In this editorial, we consider what is at work in a turn toward analyzing settler colonialism, and what this turn makes available in cultural studies and discussions of cultural production. Recent theorizations of settler colonialism reveal how cultural productions remain complicit with ongoing settlement, both in everyday practices and intellectual projects like queer studies, feminist studies, and critical race studies. This special issue considers the political stakes of the complicity of cultural studies in settler colonialism, Indigenous erasure, and anti-Blackness, and expands, revises, and repurposes the scope of the field's inquiry, politics, and archive.

In this reply, I accept Professor Fenelon basic critique: that I, as most "race scholars," fail to take seriously Indigenous accounts in my theorization. However, I challenge several of his specific arguments about my work as well as some of his historical claims. I also include in this reply an unrelated section to Professor Fenelon's critique of my work on the topic of race and emotion. This addition to my racial theory is crucial because although I still contend that racism has a material foundation, humans cannot live of bread alone–that is, race cannot exist without an emotional bond.

Pierson v. Post is widely known to both jurists and law students in relation to the question of property rights in wild animals. This article builds on Pierson v. Post and its literature by analyzing the question of ferae naturae in the context of settler and indigenous conflict on the Australian frontier in the nineteenth century. By examining both case law and the cinematic representation of the conflict over property rights on the frontier, it is argued that an understanding of the legal issues relating to ferae naturae is enhanced by an appreciation of the complexity of cross-cultural communication.

Indigenous Fijians were singularly fortunate in having a colonial administration that halted the alienation of communally owned land to foreign settlers and that, almost for a century, administered their affairs in their own language and through culturally congenial authority structures and institutions. From the outset, the Fijian Administration was criticised as paternalistic and stifling of individualism. But for all its problems it sustained, at least until World War II, a vigorously autonomous and peaceful social and political world in quite affluent subsistence — underpinning the celebrated exuberance of the culture exploited by the travel industry ever since.

This article examines the historical evolution of participatory water management in coastal Bangladesh. Three major shifts are identified: first, from indigenous local systems managed by landlords to centralized government agencies in the 1960s; second, from top-down engineering solutions to small-scale projects and people's participation in the 1970s and 1980s; and third, towards depoliticized community-based water management since the 1990s. While donor requirements for community participation in water projects have resulted in the creation of 'depoliticized' water management organizations, there are now increasing demands for involvement of politically elected local government institutions in water management by local communities.

Since 2015, China's economic performance has initially exhibited characteristics with enhancing quality and increasing efficiency in economic new normal. This article, based on economic operation status since 2015 under the logical framework of economic development with "recognizing the new normal, adapting the new normal, guiding the new normal and exploring the new normal," aims at commenting on and forecasting for China's current and recent macroeconomic development from the following ten perspectives of economic growth, indigenous innovation, industrial structure, ecological environment, regional coordination, people's livelihood improvement, mixed ownership, financial development and coordination between market and government.

This essay explores the synergies between ecowomanism and Bön, a spiritual tradition that is indigenous to Tibet. It develops the concept of "ecospirituality," a nature-inspired spiritual way of knowing and living, arguing that ecowomanism and Bön gravitate toward each other for their shared ecospiritual sensibility. This sensibility has the potential to generate and sustain possibilities for social and environment wellbeing. An examination of the ecospiritual synergies between ecowomanism and Bön can inspire new ways of knowing and help create constructive methods of making positive changes at individual, social, and environmental levels.
