This paper explores how hip-hop artists mobilize sound and style to manage loss, build new futures, and create resilient communities. Embracing an "untraditional" medium, young people contest settler violence and hegemonies of shame by expressing unique, politicized possibilities of being Indigenous, or what I am calling (ab)originality: a style of being first, fresh, and foremost. Heritage is an act of reverent rebellion: an individual honors continuity, but defies the trappings of tradition, which shackle Indigeneity to the geography and the customs of the past. Through love and creativity, artists claim visibility, voice, and everywhere.

This interview features Nephtalí De León, an artist, poet, writer and civic activist. He talks Aztec history and Aztlán (the southwestern United States of America prior to the European conquest.) De León discusses his involvement in civil rights, protests, and education. In particular he discusses the Brown Berets, La Raza Unida Party, La Voz de los Llanos (his newspaper), He reminisces about using his voice as a publisher, artist, and poet to contribute to the enlightenment of the public. De León is still actively working on indigenous rights, the immigration issue, and equality.

It has become the primary concern for the governments to chart effective methods and policies to revitalize the communities which are on the verge of extinction, most of which are indigenous. This has become more relevant and important in an era of liberalization, which more often adversely affects the welfare of such communities. In this paper we make an effort to identify and qualify measures that would revitalize moribund communities and to quantify them using fuzzy analysis. We come out with concrete suggestions for the governments and the policy makers which can be easily put in action.

This report summarizes the status of the global Dracunculiasis Eradication Program as of the end of 2012. Dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease) has been eliminated from 17 of 21 countries where it was endemic in 1986, when an estimated 3.5 million cases occurred worldwide. Only 542 cases were reported from four countries in 2012, and 103 villages still had indigenous transmission. Most remaining cases were reported from the new Republic of South Sudan, whereas Chad, Ethiopia, and Mali each reported 10 cases or less. Political instability and insecurity in Mali may become the main obstacles to interrupting dracunculiasis transmission forever.

Two Ergativities and Their Cultural Correlates proposes a distinction between two types of languages with ergative structures: a group which includes languages partially ergative from the Jê family, and another group of languages constituted mainly by languages also partially ergative from the Tupí-Guaraní family. We discuss the cultural correspondences of these two types of ergative structures, based on observations of various Amazonian indigenous groups: some Jê groups, on the one hand, and various Tupí-Guaraní groups, on the other hand, among which, the Kawahíwa, Kayabí and Araweté, whose cultures will be focused.

This article argues that the forms through which violence and atrocity are expressed – legal, statistical and testimonial – are important objects of analysis because credo is manifest in form, and an examination of form reveals something about the relationship between the 'world view' of human rights organizations and the 'styles of thought' that shape and inform their representations. The article considers what the discursive forms that seem indigenous to human rights and human rights advocacy both express (legalism, scientism) and repress (historicism), and discusses ways in which these forms of representation potentially facilitate and inhibit action.

Political blogging provides a useful testing ground for the thesis of Americanization effects of new media technology that emerged in the United States and spread internationally. This study examined the network of hypertext links to top political blogs in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany. The U.S. blogging network showed higher interconnectedness than did the U.K. and German networks, and was more highly fragmented along the lines of political differences. This study presents the relationships among the new communication form, its international diffusion, and the role of indigenous conditions affecting its adoption.

Drawing upon recent literature and a small-scale survey that explored the perceptions and experiences of front line workers and incarcerated girls1 from North Wales, this article examines the needs and experiences of girls who commit crime in Wales but are subsequently 'exported' to England to serve their sentence. While not literally sent to Coventry, these indigenous girls from Wales are forced to reside in the secure estate in England and metaphorically 'sent to Coventry'. This article considers important emerging issues including: human rights, discrimination, identity, linguistic need, family contact and resettlement.

This paper explores the institutionalisation of technical education for the indigenous Japanese weaving industry and studies the necessity of such education for traditional weavers operating in the modern economy of Meiji Japan. It focuses on how these institutions influenced the government's subsequent institutionalisation of formal technical education. Differing from the state's industrial modernisation programmes that were led by the establishment of technical high schools and engineering universities, trade associations played a major role in the institutes in the weaving districts. The paper also highlights the importance of grass roots activities in the successful adoption of new Western technology among locals.

AbstractThis article explores the nature of economic thinking among indigenous Americans prior to European contact using a methodology that can best be described as applied cultural materialism. The article begins with a discussion of the approach used to infer the economic thought in the preliterate societies that populated the USA before 1492. This analysis is followed with an overview of aboriginal economic practices and thinking. The article's third section—an interpretation of Amerindian economic thought—builds on the materials in the previous sections. The article concludes with two case studies: Cahokia and the Iroquois.

How recognition may empower or restrain Native American mobilization has not received sufficient scholarly attention and remains largely unexplored and under-theorized. This paper contributes a partial remedy to this oversight by explicitly theorizing how political recognition can mediate Native American collective action and lead to differential mobilizational outcomes. In this paper I build on and add nuances to the models of indigenous mobilization offered by Joane Nagel and Stephen Cornell and contribute to the broader literature on tribal acknowledgement by theorizing tribal status as a factor in Native American mobilization.
