The authors have consolidated years of research and occasional publication on the subject to produce a fascinating account of the evolution and devolution of job reservation in South Africa, generally, and the mining industry in particular. The mining industry, where job reservation originated a century ago, remains the last sector in which job reservation is still legally applied. Its repeal seemed imminent in recent months, but it continues to be forcefully contested by the White Mine Workers Union and may have fallen victim to the surge of the right-wing vote in the general elections held in South Africa
