Oral storytelling is important for reading, writing and social wellbeing
If there was one skill that could positively impact many other areas, such as reading, writing, and social development, wouldn't you want to teach it? Could oral storytelling be the key? The link between oral language and later reading, writing, and even social-emotional health is well established. Children with better listening and speaking skills do better on academic tasks and have more friends. But how do children become good listeners and speakers? They listen to and get regular practice telling stories orally.

POW! Prisoner of War stories from World War II and the Vietnam War come to life in my historical graphic novels. Each graphic novel includes a true POW story told in the style of a comic book, an illustrated glossary, and an activity. Through listening to oral histories, reading letters and memoirs, and communicating with veteran families, I developed an enlightened respect for POW veterans, passion for military history, and courage to color outside the lines of traditional modes of education that serve as my contributions to the field of Public History as I illustrate to illuminate the past.

This essay looks at the Zapatista struggle in Southeast Mexico from the perspective of epistemic decolonization. I follow Walter Mignolo's analysis of Zapatismo as a decolonial "theoretical revolution" and moreover build on it by articulating it in relation to other concepts in the decolonial theoretical toolkit, such as epistemic humility, pluriversality, and knowing how to listen. I conclude with an interpretation of recent events in the Zapatista communities that reinforce what Mariana Mora has called the Zapatista's "politics of listening," which also allude to the transformations that continue to make Zapatismo a global beacon of decolonial thinking and doing.

This article explores the role of reflexivity, emotion work and insider/outsider researcher status in one queer researcher's experiences of conducting fieldwork. Through exploring field diaries and interview extracts, this article highlights the impact of being/researching LGBT+ identities as a queer researcher. Five experiences are discussed: (i) the euphoria of connection, (ii) relationships with participants, (iii) retraumatisation through listening, (iv) finding oneself on the outside and (v) the researcher's shifting identity. The article concludes with suggestions on the impact studying one's own identity can have on the researcher, and suggestions for engaging in similar research practices.

Listening to Trump's rosy assessments of the covid-19 pandemic, for example, that the U.S. economy could reopen by Easter, made me pull another book off my shelf. This time it was Voltaire's 1759 satire Candide. Trump's constant flow of wishful thinking echoes Voltaire's character Professor Pangloss, who relentlessly proclaims optimistic platitudes mixed with a malign indifference to human suffering. Trump's obvious resemblance had me wondering, what does it mean that a Pangloss is in the White House and how does it affect America's ability to deal with a serious social and economic crisis?

AbstractTo explore individual identity narratives of accommodation and resistance in relationship to dominant American social, political and cultural constructs, this paper uses the Listening Guide Method of Qualitative Inquiry (Gilligan et al., 2006) to investigate the intersectionality of race, ethnicity, gender and American identity during and post college among four second-generation, college educated, Korean American women. The analysis, drawing from the emergence of themes across interviews, found that participant women accommodated and/or resisted dominant American social, political, and cultural constructs in service of their individual Korean American identities narratives during and post college.

Theories of citizenship have relied both explicitly and implicitly on the concept of "standing." This article challenges "standing" as a metaphor of citizenship by contrasting it with that of "injury." Examining Claudia Rankine's Citizen elucidates a poetics of citizenship that both calls attention to what prevents many black citizens in the United States from standing and provides a basis for alternative practices of citizenship. Refusing a politics of ressentiment often tied to identification of social injury, Citizen prefigures a transformed citizenship of tarrying, listening, and transformative interruption of the racialized status quo.

This article argues for a shift in how we relate to legal thought, practice and experience. It argues for a specifically acoustic jurisprudence, an orientation towards law attuned to questions of sound and listening. The argument is made in the abstract before moving on to an example intended to establish the political stakes of the intervention. My example is the Long Range Acoustic Device, invented at the turn of the century and used increasingly today by military and police forces as a way of amplifying the authority of the state and, in some instances, enacting serious acoustic violence.

Teaching mindfulness to parents as well as adolescents through a family‐centered intervention approach can have a positive impact on the parent–youth relationship. In mindful parenting, caretakers are aware of their own feelings and emotions, and interact with their adolescents in a mindful way by demonstrating emotional awareness, attentive listening, nonjudgment, self‐regulation, and compassion. This chapter discusses the need for family‐centered mindfulness approaches in adolescence. It introduces the Mindfulness‐enhanced Strengthening Families Program, describes specific program activities and their theoretical rationale, and presents initial empirical evidence from pilot studies of the intervention.

AbstractFive‐ and 3‐month‐old infants' perception of infant‐directed (ID) faces and the role of speech in perceiving faces were examined. Infants' eye movements were recorded as they viewed a series of two side‐by‐side talking faces, one infant‐directed and one adult‐directed (AD), while listening toIDspeech,ADspeech, or in silence. Infants showed consistently greater dwell time onIDfaces vs.ADfaces, and thisIDface preference was consistent across all three sound conditions.IDspeech resulted in higher looking overall, but it did not increase looking at theIDfaceper se. Together, these findings demonstrate that infants' preferences forIDspeech extend toIDfaces.

Local governments (LGOVs) are ubiquitous institutions for human cooperation and all need to communicate with their communities.Most Australian LGOVs employ at least one communicator but there are few principles to guide practice.This paper examines 'responsible flexibility', 'soft governance' and trends driving LGOV to enhance dialogue with communities and share ownership of problems and solutions.The paper argues that communicators are well placed to clarify and enhance their role in LGOV of the future by shifting communication focus from telling to listening, advocating the importance of transparency and communication in government, and developing expertise in facilitating community participation.

Der folgende Beitrag beschreibt am Beispiel einer akademischen Begegnung mit Israelis und Palästinensern Dialogarbeit zur Überwindung von Vorurteilen und Feindbildern. Durch solche Begegnungen können monolithische Schwarz-Weiß-Denkstrukturen überwunden werden. Das Zuhören beim Erzählen persönlicher Lebensgeschichten kann Empathie auslösen und eigene monolithische "Narrative" in Frage stellen. Beim didaktischen Konzept solcher Dialogprozesse ist auf den Aspekt der Nachhaltigkeit besonderer Wert zu legen. Such encounters can help to transcend monolithic black-and-white structures of thinking. "Listening to each other's story" can evoke empathy and can question one's own monolithic narratives.
